With the fall semester just around the corner, Consumer Reports offers its best choices for parents and teens out shopping for a car to bring back to school.

When looking for the right car for teens, including used models, Consumer Reports recommends picking cars with safety features such as electronic stability control and curtain air bags and good crash-test results. “Often parents think that putting their child in the biggest car is the safest thing they can do, but that’s not so. Teens are the most inexperienced drivers on the road, so you want to make sure they’re driving something that handles well, is agile and has as many safety features as possible—especially electronic stability control,” said David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports Automotive Test Center in East Haddam, Conn.

In addition to naming good cars for young and older drivers, Consumer Reports also names good picks for all sizes and types of drivers including the tall and small. All the models on Consumer Reports’ lists have at least average reliability and are Recommended vehicles.

“Miracles for Madison” fundraiser planned for Oregon tot
A spaghetti dinner fundraiser is being planned to benefit the family of Madisonmadison-katschke Katschke, a 1-year-old Oregon girl diagnosed with Aicardi Syndrome, Aug. 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the East Toledo Senior Activities Center, 1001 White St., Toledo.

Madison has seizures, an eye abnormality and is physically and mentally delayed. She has undergone three surgeries and is fed by a gastric tube. Proceeds raised from the event will help Madison’s parents Lindsay (Widner) and Tony Katschke with the ongoing cost of therapy, medications and special equipment.

The cost of therapy, medications and special equipment for Madison will soon become a financial hardship on the family due to limited insurance coverage.

Dinner will include spaghetti with meat or meatless sauce, salad bread and drinks. There will also be a 50/50 and other raffles, a bake sale, Wii bowling corn hole and other activities.

The donation is $7 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under. Tickets are available at the door or by contacting the Widner or Katscke families.
