Ever want to watch an artist make an original design you’ve created in glass? Visitors to GlassFest: In the Garden, the Toledo Museum of Art’s annual summer tribute to the Glass City can do just that.

This year’s fest takes place from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15 on the Glass Pavilion grounds, and almost everything is free.

The beauty of the Museum’s Georgia and David K. Wells Sculpture Garden as well as the glass artists and industrialists who have made Toledo known around the world have inspired the festival’s organizers. The popular event will feature delicious summer fare, artist demonstrations, tours and hands-on activities for children and adults. To help round out the festival, the New Orleans Party Asylum will provide upbeat Dixieland music and jazz.

Keep cool without sweating the cost
Did your last electric bill have you hot under the collar? Consumer ratings service Angie’s List offers these tips for keeping cool without sweating the cost.

Home maintenance
Check insulation: Adding insulation is a simple, cost-effective way to increase your home’s energy efficiency and lower your cooling costs.

Inspect air filters monthly and replace dirty ones: A clean air filter improves air quality and reduces stress on your AC unit, thus making it operate more efficiently.

Apply weather-stripping to window and doors: Cold air can escape through cracks. Caulk around windows and doors as needed.

Light show: Turning lights off when you’re not in the room really will reduce energy costs – especially if you’re still using incandescent bulbs. Switching to compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs will result in 75 percent less energy being used per bulb and they last about 10 times longer than an incandescent bulb.
