A quarter-ton of fun
Lucas, the elephant calf born at the Toledo Zoo on June 3, is six big months old.

In that time he has more than doubled his birth weight of 305 pounds, four teeth have erupted (he will not grow tusks until he’s older) and he has explored every inch of his exhibit. He continues to delight zoo visitors with his pachyderm playfulness, from his ever-improving “trunkability” skills to his sauntering antics using logs as balance beams. Other favorites include digging through soft sand to find buried treasures (small tires and other safe enrichment objects), munching on grapes, apple slices, bananas and celery sticks as special treats, and pushing his prized toy, a 55-gallon blue barrel, all over the exhibit. As adorable as these activities are, they are important lessons that help build his strength, communication abilities and motor skills as he grows.

And he is definitely growing. Lucas gains about two pounds every day, and he will likely continue that rate of growth for the next two to three years.

The zoo has created an online “baby book” at www.toledozoo.org/calf where visitors can follow Lucas’ progress and check out his latest photos and video clips. On May 18, 2012, Lucas and the other Toledo Zoo elephants will move to a dynamic new exhibit, Elephants of the Savanna.

Looking for forever homes
The dogs and cats at the Toledo Area Humane Society have been very good this year and they’ve all mailed their letters to Santa asking for the one thing they want the most – a forever home.

They’ve even helped Santa by getting presets for their new families. Each family that adopts a cat, dog or puppy between now and Dec. 31, will receive a free care package for their new pet. Dog and puppy care packages come with a new leash and collar, dog treats and a dog toy. Cat and kitten care packages include a new litter box, cat litter, two kitty toys, food and water bowls and a collar.

The Toledo Area Humane Society, located at 1920 Indian Wood Circle, Maumee, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call 419-891-0705, visit www.toledoareahumanesociety.org or visit the society on Facebook at Facebook.com/ToledoHumane.

Megan’s Law
The National Megan’s Law Helpline 888-ASK-PFML or 888-275-7365, is available to provide support to communities on issues related to accessing sex offender registration information; responsible use of information; sexual abuse prevention resources; and accessing crime victim support services.

The Sex Offender Registration Tips Program provides the public an opportunity to report registrants who are failing to comply with registration requirements, employment or supervision restrictions or who are in positions of trust where they can access children.

Tips can be provided via the Helpline or website at www.parentsformeganslaw.org. This program is not intended to be used to report police emergencies. Dial 911 or contact your local law enforcement agency directly for emergencies. Agency deputized staff work collaboratively with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to facilitate the appropriate follow-up action.
