Maumee Bay Nature Center to host a Spooky Carnival of Fun
Maumee Bay Nature Center will present a Spooky Carnival of Fun Oct. 22 and 23 from noon to 4 p.m.

The indoor family fun event will feature a Halloween history video, Pumpkin Master pumpkins for sale, refreshments and more.

A $5 per child craft fee includes a Halloween card and sugar skull crafts, spooky tattoos, games, cartoon videos and more.

Halloween Alternative celebration
Friendly ghosts, skeletons and witches will abound at Owens Community College’s sixth annual Halloween Alternative event set for Friday, Oct. 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Student Health and Activities Center.

The event, which is open to children ages 12 and under, is sponsored by Owens Student Government. All activities are free and area residents are welcome to attend with their children.

“Owens Community College’s ‘Halloween Alternative’ is a wonderful opportunity for families to enjoy an evening full of fun and entertainment in a safe, warm, indoor setting,” said John Byers, Owens Director of Student Involvement. “Halloween is considered a very special day by many children. The College’s Student Government is proud to provide an event for the Northwest Ohio community that captures the Halloween spirit and excitement.”

Young attendees will be able to participate in a variety of arts and crafts during their visit, including coloring festive Halloween pictures, creating their own puppets and decorating keepsake pumpkins. They will also be given a trick-or-treat bag to decorate, and then have the opportunity to fill it up with candy collected from Owens students.

The Halloween celebration will also include assorted refreshments and snacks.

Autism topic of Facebook chat
Mercy Children’s Hospital will hold a live Facebook chat featuring Michelle Nagle, who is with Mercy Autism Services.

The live question-and-answer session, will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on the “Mercy Children’s Hospital” Facebook page.

Questions may be submitted via the Mercy Children’s “wall” or e-mailed to Kristen_Kirkpatrick.mhsnr.org anytime before the session.


Flu Shot Clinic & Health Fair
A Flu Shot Clinic and Mini Health Fair will be held Oct. 18 at the James “Wes” Hancock Oregon Senior Center, 5760 Bayshore Rd., Oregon (corner of Bayshore and Stadium roads).

The health fair, provided courtesy of Promedica Bay Park Hospital, will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will include blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, carotid artery and heel scan tests.

Flu shots will be offered by Maxim from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Medicare Part B will be accepted with no co-pay if Medicare is the primary insurer. Without Part B, the cost is $30 per flu shot.


Refresh
Moms of children from infant through elementary school age are invited to have a hot breakfast and connect with other mothers at a meeting of Refresh Mom’s Group.

The group’s next meeting will be held Oct. 24 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Hope Community Church, 5650 Starr Ave. Ext., Oregon.

Children Helping Children
Something special is happening at the hands of children.

For the sixth year, the children at The Gathering Place Childcare Center, 3530 Seaman Rd., Oregon are participating in a fundraising project to help raise money for an Angel Tree to help families in need at Christmas.

For the past six years, The Gathering Place has helped families in need at Christmas through the donations made to our Angel Tree by staff and center families.

Last year, the center helped provide Christmas gifts for 25 children in 11 families. In addition, food baskets were provided for 17 families.

To raise money to help supplement the Angel Tree, each classroom at will be making two original Christmas ornaments that will be sold at the center’s Holiday Craft Show Nov. 5 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will also be a bake sale and raffle, with funds raised going to this year’s Angel Tree.

“Our goal is to help even more children have a blessed Christmas with a few gifts under the tree,” said Kristine Ellis, the center’s assistant administrator.

Jeff Chio, an Edward Jones financial advisor in Oak Harbor, is hosting a free educational seminar titled, “Key Life Decisions: Are You Prepared?” Oct. 19, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Oak Harbor Golf Club, 10433 W. Oak Harbor Southeast Rd.

The seminar will address four major topics: Protecting What's Important, Estate Planning, Understanding Taxes and Funeral Home Preparation.

Guest speakers include Gary Kohli, an estate-planning attorney; Dana Stahl, CPA; and Jennifer Waldron, Robinson-Walker Funeral Home.

Bowling fundraiser
Community members are planning a fundraiser to benefit the family of Jeff Haas, a 1975 graduate of Eastwood High School who passed away last summer after a very short battle with Stage 4 lung cancer.

The “Jeff Haas Memorial Bowling Fundraiser” will be held Oct. 30 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Varsity Lanes in Bowling Green.

The requested donation is $10 for the three hours of bowling. There will also be raffles and door prizes.

Grand opening
InProcess, formerly located at Woodville Mall, will hold a grand opening at their new location at the Great Eastern Shopping Center next to JoAnn Fabric Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Visitors to the store will find the works of a number of local and regional artists along with used books and other gift items. The store also offers a variety of art and exercise classes.

On Oct. 19 at 6 p.m., InProcess will host an art gathering for cancer survivors, family members and supporters.  There is a nominal fee. RSVP to 419-262-6223.


“Where Do I Turn?”
Have you ever been in a situation where you need to find help for yourself or your parents? Have you asked yourself or others “Where Do I Turn?”

A free seminar designed to provide community members with information about financial planning, estate planning and other aging-related issues will be held Oct. 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wood County Department of Job and Family Services , 1928 E. Gypsy Lane Rd., Bowling Green. Doors will open at 10:30 a.m. for those who have registered. Lunch is sponsored by Bowling Green Manor.

Featured speaker Blanca Wheeler from the Department of Job and Family Services will provide information pertaining to their services and eligibility requirements.

Judge David Woessner will share his resources and knowledge from his experience working in the legal field. Judge Woessner will discuss when it may be necessary for guardians to step in, the benefits of drawing up a living will, a will and a trust, as well as the workings of the Probate Court.

In addition, a certified elder law attorney from Hall and Wylkan will answer questions pertaining to estate administration, Medicaid planning and long-term care planning.

The seminar is sponsored by the Wood County Committee on Aging in collaboration with Bridge Home Health and Hospice, Bowling Green Manor, Wood County Department of Job and Family Services and Heritage Corner Health Care Campus.
