Since the beginning of the year, members of the Maumee Bay Country Quilters’ Guild have been donating their time and talents to fashion quilts for veterans traveling on Honor Flight Northwest Ohio’s 22nd mission to Washington, D.C. on Sept. 28.
The Maumee Bay Quilters worked in conjunction with the Maumee-based Quilts of Valor group to create the 80 lap-sized quilts, sewn in patriotic colors and designs.
On the evening of Sept. 28, the guild members had the pleasure of presenting the quilts to the veterans as they got off the plane at Toledo Express Airport.
Guild members also regularly make quilts for donation to soldiers and veterans through the Quilts for Soldiers program. The quilters meet to work on the quilts the last Wednesday of the month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Black Swamp Quilt Shoppe, 1535 Woodville Rd., Millbury.
“It’s a real honor to be able to do something to honor our veterans,” said guild member Ranaye McLaughlin. “There are so many generous people who donate fabric – we very seldom have to buy quilt supplies.”
