The Two Villages initiative will sponsor an encore presentation of Operation: Street Smart Tuesday, Sept. 27 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Woodmore High School gym.

The presentation is geared toward parents, school staff and community leaders from civic, religious, academic, and athletic groups from Woodmore and neighboring communities.

Sgt. Michael Powell of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations is returning to share his expertise with high-risk behaviors, including information about our own communities.

Sgt. Powell gives a comprehensive look at the substances being used, including commonly abused prescription medications that are easy accessible in most homes.

Created by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Operation Street Smart is a collaborative effort between D.A.R.E and the Special Investigations Unit, the undercover narcotic branch of the Sheriff’s office.

The goal of the program is to provide current and up-to-date information on drug trends, terminology, paraphernalia and physiological effects to adults who interact with teens.

This hands-on presentation promises to be eye-opening, according to Cheryl Seigley, Specialized Dockets Coordinator for the Ottawa County Juvenile Court. “This presentation is used to train judges, probation staff and law enforcement across Ohio – I encourage all of you to attend if you can,” she said.

In addition to serving the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Sgt. Powell was a supervisor with the FBI Drug Task Force in Columbus and is a member of the Narcotics Association Regional Coordinating Officers (NARCO). He drafted the core curriculum of the Basic and Advance Undercover Narcotics courses and is widely recognized as an expert in illegal drugs, their manufacture, sale, and impact on our society.

Two Villages Initiative, which is hosting the presentation, is a gathering of concerned citizens challenging the culture to make the two villages of Elmore and Woodville safer, healthier places for all children.

Debate sparks vaccine discussion
In light of discussion sparked by the recent political debates, O. Marion Burton, MD, FAAP, president, American Academy of Pediatrics released a statement concerning the HPV Vaccine.

“The American Academy of Pediatrics would like to correct false statements made in the Republican presidential campaign that HPV vaccine is dangerous and can cause mental retardation,” Burton said. “There is absolutely no scientific validity to this statement. Since the vaccine has been introduced, more than 35 million doses have been administered, and it has an excellent safety record.

“The American Academy of Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Academy of Family Physicians all recommend that girls receive HPV vaccine around age 11 or 12,” he said. “That’s because this is the age at which the vaccine produces the best immune response in the body, and because it’s important to protect girls well before the onset of sexual activity. In the U.S., about 6 million people, including teens, become infected with HPV each year, and 4,000 women die from cervical cancer. This is a life-saving vaccine that can protect girls from cervical cancer.”
