Pride of Toledo contest The Toledo Museum of Art is encouraging community members and Facebook users to enter its “Pride of Toledo” Photography Contest and Exhibition.
The contest will spotlight photographs celebrating Toledo and its culture, architecture, history or iconic images. Digital images submitted should clearly be of Toledo. Contestants can enter photographs online through July 24. Each contestant may enter up to three works.
By integrating art with social media, the public will be able to view the entries and vote on Facebook for their favorite photographs. The 30 most popular images will be printed, framed and shown in an exhibition Sept. 9 through Nov.13 in the Museum’s Community Galleries. The top three works with the most votes will be highlighted in the show.

Ring-tailed Lemurs Leap into Toledo What could be cuter than a ring-tailed lemur? Simple. Two ring-tailed lemurs!
The Toledo Zoo welcomes Fanta and Fresca, two female ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta), from the Duke Lemur Center in North Carolina. Fanta and Fresca are 4-year-old sisters.
Although sometimes mistaken for rodents, lemurs are members of the primate family, related to monkeys and apes. Their bodies are about 18 inches long – about the size of large domestic cats – with distinctive ringed tails that are another 24 inches long. Known for their piercing stare, that wide-eyed appearance has a biological basis; limited movement within their eye sockets forces them to turn their heads to better see objects.
These social, intelligent animals like to sunbathe and huddle together in “lemur balls” to stay warm or maintain social bonds. They are also agile athletes and spend their time on the ground or in trees, easily moving from one to the other. In their native Madagascar, lemurs are in danger of extinction because of habitat loss, poaching and hunting. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) has developed a Species Survival Plan for ring-tailed lemurs.

Summer Food Program Thousands of kids in Lucas County have breakfast and lunch at school. So what is happening to the kids when school is out for the summer?
Thanks to the Summer Food Program, they aren’t going hungry.
At roughly 40 sites throughout Toledo, kids can receive free meals this summer, Monday through Friday at various times. To find specific locations and meal times, parents and their children can dial United Way 2-1-1, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Children up to age 18 can receive meals, no questions asked.
“Our goal is to make sure no child in Lucas County goes hungry this summer,” said Todd Tibbits, President and CEO, YMCA and JCC of Greater Toledo. “We are pleased to be one of the facilitators of this worthwhile program, along with various other organizations in our community.”
The federal program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture and administered by the Ohio Department of Education, with support from local organizations including United Way, Feed Lucas County Children, the YMCA/JCC of Greater Toledo, local food banks, and ProMedica.
The locations of the feeding sites are based on proximity to schools in which at least 50 percent of the students receive free or reduced lunches during the school year. Sites are staffed with a combination of paid and volunteer staff. The food served meets state guidelines and includes milk, fruits and vegetables, grains/bread, and a meat.
