The pitter-patter of not-so-little feet can be heard at the Toledo Zoo.
A little before midnight on June 3, 32-year-old Renee, one of the zoo’s two female African elephants, gave birth to her second calf, a male, estimated weight 200 to 225 pounds.
Now the zoo is holding a “Name the Baby Elephant” contest. Zookeepers have provided a list of names and is asking everyone to vote on their favorite:
• Lucas, honoring Lucas County voters’ longtime support of the zoo ( the keepers’ choice).
• Chuck, in recognition of the first animal donated to the zoo in 1900, a woodchuck.
• Iain: (EE-ehn), after the noted African elephant conservationist, Iain Douglas-Hamilton.
From the winning elephant name entries, the zoo will draw a random prize winner who will receive a one-year family membership to the zoo, enrollment in the zoo’s elephant ZooPAL program and many other “ele-fun” gifts.
Vote online at www.toledozoo.org/babyname or in person at the zoo (North Star Trading Post® Gift Shop - near the main entrance or KC’s Corner Store - by Nature’s Neighborhood).
All entries are due by 11:59 a.m. Monday, June 27. The zoo will announce the elephant calf’s name and the prizewinner Thursday, June 30.
For a complete list of the official contest rules, visit www.toledozoo.org/babyname.
Planned viewing hours of Renee and her calf are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., although the hours could be irregular. Weather changes and/or the continued well-being of both animals may require periodically bringing both animals off exhibit. If Renee and her calf are off exhibit, the zoo’s other elephants, Louie and Twiggy, may be available for viewing during regular zoo hours.
