There were heartfelt stories of selflessness, strength and unconditional love.
Judges in the Mother of the Year Contest sponsored by Alan Miller Jewelers and 92.5 KISS FM pored through 135 entries, but when the judging was through, Rita Howard’s nomination of her mom, Karen, was chosen as the grand prize winner.
Rita wrote: “My Mom deserves to win because she is the kindest person I know.

She runs a home daycare and watches kids at our house. She does not have many nice things for herself because she spends a lot of her time and money on other people.
I always try to do something special for her on Mother’s Day. Her wedding ring is falling apart right now and that is the only really nice piece of jewelry she has and I would love to be able to have it fixed for her.
She would be happy with anything.”
As “Mother of the Year,” Karen was awarded a $500 shopping spree to Alan Miller Jewelers, and a limo ride to dinner at Real Seafood at The Docks. KISS morning show Sid Kelly was on hand to congratulate Karen.
Second-place winner Jordan Giovannucci, of Maumee, got a ladies’ Seiko watch for her mom; and third-place winner Jenna Spetz, of Oregon, won a Pandora bracelet.
Alan Miller said. “This is about the 10th year we’ve been sponsoring a Mother’s Day contest and picking a winner is always difficult.
“One year we chose a mom who was quitting smoking. Another year, we had a mom who was helping inmates,” he said. “There are so many great stories and extraordinary moms.” Cody Miller, of Alan Miller Jewelers, was on hand to help “Mother of the Year” Karen Howard during her recent $500 shopping spree at the Oregon store.
