“Dog Days,” benefit car show set at Wildlife Refuge
Bring your best friend (the canine kind) to Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge Sept. 25 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for the annual “Dog Days” event.
Dr. Mark Reineck of Fremont Animal Hospital will offer a presentation on “Pet First Aid" at 10 a.m. Micro-chipping will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. ($50 fee).
Watch a working dog demonstration at 11 a.m., and enjoy lunch (hot dogs, what else?) at noon, and enter your dog in the “100-yard Dog Dash” at 1 p.m. Photographer Robin Arnold will be on hand to take a photo of pet owners and their canine companions.
Don’t have a dog? Representatives from the Ottawa County Humane Society will have some available for adoption.
As always, pet owners are welcome to walk your dog (on a leash) on our scenic trail system.
“Cars for Critters” The Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge will host the third annual “Cars for Critters” benefit car show will be held Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Proceeds from the car show will benefit wildlife, habitat restoration and wildlife rehabilitation. Mona Rutger and volunteers from Back to the Wild, a wildlife rehabilitation center, will be on hand with live eagles, hawks, owls, and other native wildlife.
In keeping with the critter theme, some of the car classes will be for animal-named cars. For example, a 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner might compete against a 1962 Ford Thunderbird in the “Best Bird” class. Classes are available for all types of cars, and trophy plaques will be awarded to class winners by people’s choice. Registration the day of show is $12. T-shirts and goody bags will be given to the first 100 participants. Door prizes and gas cards will be given away.
In addition, hayrides will be offered through the refuge during the event. For additional information or to register, call Eddy at 419-898-0014.
The Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge entrance is located 15 miles east of Toledo or 16 miles west of Port Clinton on SR 2.

Event promotes safe drug disposal Oregon Community and Family Coalition (OCFC) and the Oregon Police Department will host a Community Medication Drop-off Saturday, Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the City of Oregon Complex, 5330 Seaman Rd.
During collection hours, unused, unwanted or expired medications may be dropped off for proper disposal. The service is free and anonymous and no questions will be asked.
“The initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue,” according to Dave Bensch, of OCFC. “Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are increasing at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.
“Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet,” he said. “In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away – both potential safety and health hazards.”
The Oregon drug drop-off event is part of a nationwide Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) prescription drug ‘take-back’ initiative that seeks to prevent increased pill abuse and theft. Collection sites in other local communities can be found at www.dea.gov.
