As always, this year’s Pemberville Free Fair, set for Aug. 18-21, will be a big deal.
In fact, organizers promise this year’s fair – one of Ohio’s last “free” fairs – will be a “wheely” big deal. Fair Board members and committee chairpersons have been meeting and working diligently since last August in preparation for this year's event, which is held in Memorial Park and in other locations throughout the village.
With a theme, “A `Wheel’ Adventure,” the fair will include Big Wheel races, car enthusiasts showing off their wheels, exhibits, a Quilt Show, a Dog Show, a Swine Scramble plus rides, food, entertainment and much more.
A highlight of the fair is always the Grand Parade, which this year will feature Pemberville’s Pedal Pushers, The Ohio Wheelmen and Pemberville's Ladybugs among an assortment of marching units led by the Eastwood High School Band.
Another “cool” event at this year’s fair will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday or immediately after the parade ends, when fair organizers intend to answer the critical question: how long can six people sit on a block of ice? The contestants will all be 18 or older and must remain seated on the ice at all times - except for a five-minute break every 45 minutes -- or they will be disqualified.
Even the clothing they wear will be regulated so that it is the same for all competitors. A T-shirt and shorts will be provided by fair officials for each participant.
“The great thing about the Pemberville Free Fair is that people are encouraged to not just come to the fair but also to participate in the exhibits and shows, the events, etc,” said Todd Sheets, Grand Parade Chairman.
