Annual Stand Against Child Abuse held June 12 at Traveler’s Motorcycle Club in Toledo.
The event raised funds for the Children’s Advocacy Center, Warriors for the Children and other non-profit organizations to raise awareness and to help children who are the victims of abuse.
Stand Against Child Abuse was founded by “Big” Mike Wallace, of Oregon, following the death of his 3-year-old granddaughter Kaycie Bork in October 2008 – a victim of ongoing abuse by her mother’s boyfriend.
A survivor of childhood abuse himself, Wallace said he felt compelled to create something positive from such an horrific situation.
Stand Against Child Abuse’s stated mission includes:
• To raise awareness of child abuse, its signs and the possible consequences of allowing the cycle to continue.
• To provide referrals to resources available to those who suspect abuse, who are in danger of continuing the cycle of abuse, or who have need of counseling and/or other forms of support following confirmed abuse.
• To raise money to help support non-profit organizations that are available to counsel and otherwise support victims of child abuse and their families.
In a heartfelt video that can be viewed youtube.com, Wallace tells Kaycie’s story, and offers the reminder that “child abuse isn’t something you see on TV or read about in an article. It is something that is happening right now…in our neighborhoods, families and sometimes even in our homes. It is well hidden by the people involved, and it takes a conscious effort to identify,” he says.
“Take the time to observe. Ask questions and record suspicions that you may have,” he cautions.
