31st Portage River Festival set for June 27 in Elmore

The 31st annual Portage River Festival, which will be held Sunday, June 27 at Depot Park in Elmore, is promising great food and entertainment for the entire family.

A community garage sale beginning June 25 and continuing through Sunday will help kick off the weekend. To be added to the garage sale list please call 419-862-3029.

This year's festival will include:

• A “Redneck Lawnmower Pulling Contest” (info: Tim at 419-376-2639)

• A talent show (info: Randy at 419-665-2761)

• A flea market and craft show (info: Rick at 419-862-3058)

• The first annual Charlie Schneider Memorial Car Show and “Ugliest Pickup Truck Contest” (Info: 419-862-2978)

• The 35th annual Portage River Bicycle Tour (info: 419-243-7680)

• And a new event – The Portage River 5K run (info: Candy at 419-355-3322).

The Elmore Historical Society, which promotes the festival, will be selling hot roast beef sandwiches, its famous fresh-cut French fries, hot dogs and Coney dogs, onion rings, baked beans, sausage and sauerkraut and ice cream topped with fresh sweet strawberries.

The “Harmonica Man” will share his southern gospel/country talents with a troupe of singers that includes Duane Carlson, Barbie Gand and Friends, Victor Jones, Dave Killbride and professional piano player and singer Dick Starcher.  In addition, Heidi’s Twirlers will showcase their talents as part of an afternoon of entertainment.

The festival will also feature its first annual cake-baking contest. Categories for the contest include fruit, non-frosted, frosted and decorated cakes. For more Information call Renee at 419-574-1559 or Winnie at 419-707-7972.

At dusk, the Elmore Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring its annual “Red, White and Boom” fireworks spectacular at Woodmore High School. A chicken barbecue, with take-outs available, and live music will add to the patriotic salute to our nation.
