Safe in the Shade Walk/Run to benefit cancer patients
To mark the beginning of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, “Safe in the Shade,” the Second Annual Walk/5KRun for Melanoma, will be held May 1 at 9 a.m. at shelter #3 at Maumee Bay State Park, 1750 Park Rd., Oregon.

Event organizers Cindy Pickett, of Elmore, and Eleanor Riffle, of Millbury, are dedicating the event in honor of Pickett’s son, Micah, a 2000 graduate of Lake High School, who was diagnosed with melanoma in 2005.

“Though Micah is doing well, we wanted to increase awareness about melanoma and to raise funds for the Victory Center,” said Riffle, who is Micah’s mother-in-law.

The registration fee is $20 in advance (www.thevictorycenter.org) and $25 the day of the event (8 to 8:30 a.m.). Ronald McDonald will be on hand to get the event started. There will also be raffles and other special activities.

All proceeds raised will go to The Victory Center, which supports and educates cancer patients and their families.

Organizers offer these tips for protecting yourself from skin cancer:

• Limit direct sun exposure during midday (10 a.m. and 4 p.m.);

• Cover up – dark colors generally provide more protection than light colors;

• Use sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or higher;

• Wear a hat and sunglasses;

• Avoid tanning beds and sunlamps.

Marrow Drive set for April 19
To help 5-year-old Blake Kamstra and potentially thousands nationwide, Terra Community College is hosting a donor drive for the “Be the Match Registry” operated by the National Marrow Donor Program April 19 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the atrium of Building B.

Students in Phi Theta Kappa and Terra Student Nurses Association will assist in the registration process.

Bob and Charline Moyer, of Fremont, are Blake’s great-grandparents and are hoping the community will respond to this call for help.

Blake, who lives in Cincinnati, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in January 2009. In September 2009, he began maintenance treatments, but just last month, a trace of leukemia was found in his spinal fluid and in the bone marrow. Blake entered the hospital again March 9 to begin intensive chemotherapy with the ultimate goal of a bone marrow transplant and cure.

By becoming a partner with the National Marrow Donor Program and hosting the marrow drive, Terra has made it possible for all testing fees to be waived. Donations will be accepted, however.

Those who participate in the testing will be joining a national registry. Of the thousands of patients who need a life-saving transplant, only 30 percent will find a suitable donor within their family. The vast majority must find an unrelated donor whose tissue type matches theirs.

The steps include:

• Completing a registration form with contact information, health history questions and a signed agreement to join the registry.

• Giving a swab of cheek cells so your tissue type can be tested.

For more information on the Terra drive, contact Jessica Bayer at 419-559-2151. For more information on the Be the Match Registry, call 1-888- 862-7769 or visit www.bethematch.org.

Back to one’s roots
The creator of one of the leading pieces of software for genealogists will be the guest speaker at a free workshop April 25 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center.

Bruce Buzbee will present an overview and demonstration of the latest version of his software - RootsMagic 4 – during the one-time only workshop. Pre-registration is required.

RootsMagic has remained popular due to its ease of use. It provides features that make it possible to easily record, share, and print a family history. RootsMagic also streamlines the process of incorporating photographs. Buzbee will share techniques for entering information, creating notes, navigating through options, finding sources and repositories, adding images, creating reports and charts, and importing/exporting GEDCOM files. He also provides instruction on how to combine reports to create a book, using the “publish” feature of RootsMagic.

Although normally closed on Sundays, the Hayes Research Library will be open from noon to 1 p.m. to enable workshop attendees to come early to browse the genealogical collections or conduct limited research.

On April 25 only, Buzbee will donate autographed copies of RootsMagic (containing the software CD and book) to workshop attendees who become members of Hayes Center at the $100 or above level (a retail value of $39.95.)

To register for the workshop or for information, contact Head Librarian Becky Hill at 419-332-2081, ext. 31 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
