TOLEDO - The chill in the air can only mean one thing – it’s time for Frozentoesen at the Toledo Zoo. With half-price admission and a cool assortment of frosty fun, you won’t want to miss this opportunity to beat the “it’s January” blues.
 
Presented by St. Vincent’s Mercy Children’s Hospital, Frozentoesen features Cabin Fever Feeds each weekend, offering visitors the chance to watch some of their favorite zoo animals chow down.

 
“Winterfest 18” set for Jan. 9 and 10 in Perrysburg

Winterfest, one of Ohio’s longest-running weekend winter bluegrass concerts, will be held Jan. 9 and 10 at the Holiday Inn French Quarter in Perrysburg.
 
The concert will run from 12:30 to 11 p.m. Jan. 9. On Jan. 10, enjoy the music from noon to 11 p.m. Among those scheduled to perform are the award-winning Goldwing Express, Dailey & Vincent, Larkin Family, Bluegrass Mountaineers, David Parmley, James King, David Davis and the Warrior River Boys.
 
Tickets are $23 per day or $45 for the weekend for adults. Children 12 and under will be admitted free. Jamming is encouraged and welcome, so bring your instruments. Special discounts are available on rooms at the hotel. Call 419-874-3111 for reservations and mention the “bluegrass rate.”

Please don’t feed the deer

Watching deer, especially this time of year when they are the most active, is a popular pastime in the local Metroparks. Feeding deer, however, is a misguided and potentially dangerous thing to do, for people as well as the animals, park naturalists say.
 
Feeding wildlife in the Metroparks is prohibited for good reasons.
 
The animals don’t need it. Deer and other wildlife do not need the food that people provide. Some foods, like popcorn and bread, actually can do more harm than good to animals, including ducks.
