Presenters will come from regional agencies and institutions, with an expected audience largely from Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.

Research and outreach leaders will present findings from recent studies and identify important areas of uncertainty. Specific topics will include:

• highlights from recent modeling studies

• the latest edge-of-field results

• rates and rationale for adoption of management practices

• monitoring and tracking algal blooms in Lake Erie

• water treatment methods to reduce cyanobacteria

Expected audience includes academic researchers, state and federal agencies and the agricultural community interested in the latest algal bloom science and technology. A complete conference agenda will be made available in the near future. To register, visit https://ohioseagrant.osu.edu/news/calendar.

Buckeye Island Hop
Spend a weekend on the Lake Erie islands at the Buckeye Island Hop, September 23-25, sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Society, the Columbiana County Alumni Club, the Friends of Stone Laboratory, and The Ohio State University Retirees Association.

This annual event gives alumni and friends of Ohio State a chance to check out Gibraltar and South Bass islands, take part in an outdoor volunteer project, and meet new people.

On Friday night, leave from Port Clinton on the Jet Express at 7:15 p.m. or from Catawba Island on the Miller Ferry at 6:30 or 7:30 p.m. If you’re arriving Saturday morning, take the 8:45 a.m. Jet Express or the 8:30 a.m. Miller Ferry. Stone Lab vans will take you to the Stone Lab Field Station Office on South Bass, then you’ll hop on over to Gibraltar on a research vessel or water taxi. Learn more about Put-in-Bay at visitputinbay.com.

Fall weather on Gibraltar is unpredictable and often cold, so check the forecast and dress accordingly in clothes that can get dirty. If it rains, we’ll still be working, which makes rain gear a plus. Meals and bed linens (dormitory style bunk beds) will be provided, but be sure to bring toiletries. And be sure to pack your work gloves, slip-resistant footwear, and a flashlight. Typical jobs include painting, weeding, landscaping, organizing sheds, and misc. house cleaning.

Anglers are welcome to bring along their fishing gear with a fishing license, and birders should bring their binoculars. Spending money is always recommended for ferry ride fees, Stone Lab merchandise, land and water taxis, and other free-time activities.

Children ages 10 and older are welcome to participate in all activities but must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times. Minors 17 and younger must be supervised by a parent at all times, including the volunteer activity. Because there are no daycare facilities, younger children should be left at home.

Registration is not final until you receive confirmation from the Put-in-Bay Stone Lab office. Registration is required even if you arrange accommodations and meals elsewhere. Please call 419-285-1800 with questions. Registrations must be received by the Stone Lab office no later than 5 p.m, on September 16. Registration is limited and on a first come, first served basis. Housing is dormitory-style, including bunk beds.

Benefit ring raffle
Northwood Jewelers is conducting a raffle for a diamond ring appraised at $11,200, with proceeds going to benefit Corrie Albright of Woodville.

In 2011, Corrie, an active wife and mother of two, underwent what was to be a routine hysterectomy. After developing one complication after another which required countless trips to local hospitals, the Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic, she has endured multiple invasive surgeries and numerous procedures. On May 7, she received an intestinal transplant at the Cleveland Clinic. Part of the recovery process requires her to remain close to the clinic to help mitigate any complications. Medical costs accruing over the past five years have taken a toll on the family’s finances.

The ring was donated for raffle by a Northwood Jewelers customer, who wishes to remain anonymous. The customer, doesn’t know Albrights but was moved after hearing about Corrie and wanted to help the family. The 14K white and yellow gold ring, custom designed by Northwood Jewelers, features a 1.51 carat pear-shaped diamond. The value was determined by GIA certified appraiser Jim O’Bryant, who donated his services.

Raffle tickets, donated by Leeper Printing Company, are $20. Only 800 tickets will be sold. The drawing will be held Sept. 9 at a fundraiser being held from 6-11 p.m. at Ole Zim’s Wagon Shed in Gibsonburg. Raffle tickets are available at Northwood Jewelers, 4725 Woodville Rd., Northwood or call 419-691-6352.

The fundraiser will include a chicken and ham dinner, music provided by DJ Riddle, live and silent auctions and a 50/50 raffle.

“Caring for Corrie” fundraiser tickets are $40 per person. For more info or to make a donation, visit the “Caring for Corrie” Facebook page, or contact Barb at 419-410-8666, Helen at 419-509-8416, Becky at 419-350-8687 or Carol at 419-680-6643.

Lake project
A public hearing to discuss the Western Lake Erie Nutrient Source Inventory project will be held Sept. 8 at 5:30 p.m. in the Huntington Room of the Main Branch of the Toledo Public Library, 325 Michigan St., Toledo.

The hearing will include an overview of the inventory project. Those attending may offer comments and ask questions.

The inventory is a joint-effort by the City of Toledo and Lucas County to identify and then reduce the nutrient sources that lead to formation of harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie.
