Schedel Arboretum & Gardens will host a special Mother’s Day weekend program at the 17-acre garden estate, located at 19255 W. Portage River S. Rd. in Elmore off Ohio Turnpike Exit 81.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, guests can “Meet the Artists” behind the wide variety of items sold in The Garden Argosy gift shop there. The artists’ works include clay leaf impressions, sea glass jewelry, purses, origami, decorated gourds and steel artwork.
Jan Pugh, of Packer Creek Pottery in Genoa, will be among the artists in attendance. Children are invited to plant a flower for mom under the guidance of Schedel’s assistant grounds superintendent Kendra Schwartz.
On Mother’s Day – Sunday May 13 – all mothers can enjoy free admission to Schedel between noon and 4 p.m. Regular admission applies to all other visitors.
Besides the garden tours, visitors can see an exhibit of 12 handcrafted quilts in the MacAlear Galley at Schedel’s Brown Welcome Center that will run through Oct. 31. The quilts are made by the Quilt Foundry Guild whose approximately 20 members meet each Wednesday in Maumee to make quilts for donation to support local charities such as the Black Swamp Benefit sale for the Sunshine Children’s Home, the Mennonite Central Committee and Project Linus for sick and needy children.
Gates close at 4 p.m. both days. Regular garden hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays. The facility is closed on Mondays.
