Ohioan Robert Hines used art as a forum to educate people about the wonders of nature.

In the year Hines would have celebrated his 100th birthday, the Hayes Presidential Center commemorates his contributions to nature conservation and art in the exclusive exhibit, “The Wildlife Art of Bob Hines.” The exhibit, which is open Aug. 14, brings together a broad collection of Hines’ original artwork from public and private collections.

It was created with guidance from John D. Juriga, author of the illustrated biography “Bob Hines: National Wildlife Artist” set for release this year.

Artist Robert Hines

Hines (1912-1994) holds the distinction of being the only National Wildlife Artist for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. He developed his love of nature growing up along the banks of the Sandusky River in Fremont. Despite almost no formal art training, Hines’ innate talent led him to become an internationally recognized wildlife artist.

His work illustrated a weekly newspaper feature titled “Under Ohio Skies,” which introduced young and old to Ohio’s natural history via a walking, talking raccoon named “Buckeye Bill.” Hines also illustrated numerous wildlife and birding guides and books – including those by author Rachel Carson and Robert McClung (of Grizzly Adams fame). He also managed the federal Duck Stamp contest for 31 years and helped create the U.S. Postal Service’s Wildlife Conservation Stamp program.

The Wildlife Art of Bob Hines is on display in the Hayes Museum 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays (the Museum is closed Mondays and on Easter). Admission is $7.50 for adults, $6.50 for seniors age 60 and older, $3 for children ages 6 to 12, and free to children age 5 and younger.

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center is located at the corner of Hayes and Buckland avenues, Fremont, Ohio. For information call 800-998-PRES or visit www.rbhayes.org.

Funding for the exhibit is provided by The Fremont Co., Diversified Insurance Service, and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources-Division of Wildlife.
