Two-day re-enactment & exhibit mark Civil War 150th
In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Hayes Presidential Center is offering an opportunity to learn more about the war by experiencing it.

The annual Hayes Civil War Re-enactment, which will be held Oct. 1 and 2, brings together hundreds of costumed re-enactors for a two-day living history event. The grounds of Spiegel Grove will serve as a campsite for both Union and Confederate armies and provides the staging area for three recreations of the Battle of Fisher’s Hill. The re-enactment takes place 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Event admission is $4 for adults and $2 for children 6 to 12. Visitors wishing to tour the Hayes Home and Hayes Museum can take advantage of Re-enactment discount prices of $4 per building for adults and $2 per building for children ages 6 to 12.

The Hayes Museum admission ticket includes entry to the exclusive exhibit Civil War: Battlefield & Homefront. Using personal letters, artifacts, and photographs of Northern Ohio residents, the exhibit tells the stories of not only those who were on the battlefield, but also those who remained on the homefront. Many items included in the exhibit never have been on display. They are on loan from the L.M. Strayer Collection. Mr. Strayer will be on hand 1 to 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, to discuss his collection.

Re-enactments will be held at noon and 3 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. On Sunday, Brigadier Alton G. Berry of the 88th Regional Support Command leads a presidential memorial service at the burial site of President Rutherford B. Hayes.

During the Hayes Civil War Re-enactment no parking is permitted on the grounds of the Hayes Presidential Center. A free handicap-accessible shuttle service is provided to ferry visitors from three designated parking areas at Memorial Hospital (off Third Avenue), Croghan Colonial Bank (corner of Arch & Croghan streets) and Hayes Elementary School (916 Hayes Avenue).

For more information, call 800-998-PRES. The Hayes Presidential Center is located at the corner of Hayes and Buckland avenues, Fremont. Visit www.rbhayes.org for a complete list of year-round special events.

Sneeek PeeeK at Trick or Treat
Pemberville will offer a “A Sneeek PeeeK at Trick or Treat!” Oct. 8 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The event, sponsored by the Pemberville Freedom Area Historical Society, among others, will include a Porch Tour of five homes.

Visitors can “sit for a spell” or just enjoy the music “floating” from the newly haunted Pember-Furry House. While visiting the oldest home in town, revisit a favorite childhood story in the bedroom and visit the Bride and Groom’s wedding reception in the kitchen.

Venture back to the completely decorated old school house for some tales of old, but beware – don’t make the Mad Scientist too angry or you may find yourself in the middle of a bizarre experiment.  The balloon artist will be on hand to twist some fun; watch out for the jugglers on their unicycles and be prepared for magic by Brandon Coleman.

There will also be games and plenty of treats including witch’s fingers or devil’s brew. Is anything more fun at a party than games, especially when everyone is a winner?

The most exciting event of all promises to be the “You Are So Bootiful” children’s costume parade and contest, open to all the revelers aged birth to 12 years or sixth grade. Cash prizes of $50 will be awarded for best costume in three age categories. Entrants should line up promptly at 5:30 p.m. at the fire hall.

The purchase of a $5 wristband entitles each child to participate in all activities (under age 3 is free). One accompanying adult per child is free and a single pass is $3.
