Didn’t manage to squeeze in a summer vacation this year?

Late-summer and fall discounts on lodging and day packages plus a slate of special events make this time of year one of the best times to visit the Lake Erie island of Put-in-Bay.

Day and overnight packages include winery tours, a historic bread and breakfast, couples’ getaways, family day packs and girlfriends’ escapes.

A Put-in-Bay getaway can begin with the first step onto the Miller Ferry, which offers a relaxing 18-minute ferry ride to the island. Choose to bring your car, or park your vehicle in the free parking area. There’s plenty of transportation on the island, including golf carts and bicycles. Miller passenger/car ferries depart Catawba daily.

With fewer crowds and gentle weather that often accompanies autumn, here are some Put-in-Bay Fall Event highlights:

Historical Weekend, Sept. 9-11
This annual celebration features open houses at Gibraltar Island’s Stone Laboratory and South Bass Island Lighthouse; a live birds of prey display at the Wildlife Museum; over 1,200 Boy Scouts at a Camporee; parades, military encampments, plus an old-fashioned baseball game. The Toledo Symphony will perform at Perry’s Memorial Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and the ferry will run an extra trip back to Catawba at 9 p.m.

Miller Boat Line 5K & 1 Mile Family Fun Walk, Sept. 24

All ages and levels welcome for the event, which traverses a shaded waterfront path. Proceeds benefit the Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church. Sign up at www.PutinBay5K.com.

Island Wine Festival, Oct. 1

More than 250 wines from across the country will be available for sample or purchase at the event, which will also include food, island wine history displays and a silent auction at the Crescent Tavern downtown.

Oktoberfest, Oct. 8 and 9
Cold beer and hot wine, along with traditional German foods, plus live family entertainment including polka music and German style dancers will highlight the festival under the big tent at De Rivera Park, downtown. Two-day passes available.
