Oregon Community Theatre staging “Spelling Bee” Oregon Community Theatre will present, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” April 29 and 30 and May 6 and 7 at 8 p.m. and May 1 at 3 p.m. in the Fassett Middle School auditorium, 3025 Starr Ave., Oregon.
The musical tells the hilarious story of six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves. The youths learn that winning isn’t everything and losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser.

Cinco de Mayo Mexico’s annual observance of Cinco de Mayo has become quite a celebration all throughout North America, and the Toledo Zoo has become Cinco de Mayo headquarters for families in the region.
On Sunday, May 1, the zoo will present a full day of music, dance and crafts designed to bring the fun of this holiday north of the border.

Live in the House The Pemberville Opera House will welcome Picks & Sticks May 7 at 7:30 p.m., as part of the Live in the House! concert series.
Picks & Sticks’ “rollercoaster-style” of performance includes a hammer dulcimer guitar and banjo spiced up with vivacious vocals. Audiences will enjoy the gumbo mixture of acoustical folk, swing, traditional, light pop, western, jazz and ethnic tunes delivered in surprising arrangements.

Grand Prix Monte Carlo The James “Wes” Hancock Senior Center, located at Stadium and Bayshore roads, will present “Grand Prix Monte Carlo on the Bay” May 27 from 1 to 8 p.m.
The event will include slots, blackjack, Big Six, roulette, raffles and more. The car show will run from 4 to 8 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by Cruisin’ Zeake.
One-acts presented Clay High School Limelighters will present “An Evening of One Acts,” May 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
The program will include three one-act plays, each directed by a senior class member of the Limelightrers. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students and are available at the auditorium box office before the show.
Butterfly House kicks off season The Butterfly House, located at 11455 Obee Rd., Whitehouse, opened for the season May 1.
Visitors can see more than 1,000 butterflies from around the world flying freely in a colorful, indoor garden environment. In the Butterfly Nursery, butterflies emerge from their chrysalises right before visitors’ eyes.
To start off the season, butterflies from Costa Rica will be featured. Among visitor favorites are the Blue Morpho, and the Glass Wing butterfly.

Art on exhibit The Collingwood Arts Center Resident Artists Exhibition, a celebration of some of best work the center’s current residents have to offer – is set to open on May 6, at 7 p.m. The exhibit will be showcased throughout the gallery spaces in the building, located at 2413 Collingwood Blvd., Toledo.
The reception is free and open to the public and will feature both visual artwork and live performances until 10 p.m. Light refreshments will be available. The show will remain on display throughout the month.
Visitors Guide available The 2011 Sandusky County Visitors Guides have arrived and are ready for distribution from the office of the Sandusky County Convention & Visitors Bureau.
“The 2011 Visitors Guide is presented in a magazine format that provides space to more adequately describe the great attractions and destinations we have in Sandusky County. In addition to the Hayes Presidential Center, our unique downtowns, historical sites and outdoor activities like biking the Northcoast Bike Trail, Scuba Diving at White Star Park, canoeing the Sandusky River are destinations for tourists.” Connie Durdel, executive director of the Bureau.

Summer classes offered Toledo School for the Arts is offering summer evening classes for teens and adults. Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays July 12 through Aug. 4. Cost vary depending on materials and length of class.
Classes are offered in Glass Fusion, Portrait Drawing, Digital Photography, Creative Writing, Steel Drum Band, Guitar and Cake Decorating. A special, free monthly Painting Group with Leslie Ann Taylor is offered May through September. Some classes have limited space, so early registration is encouraged.

Painting with Glass PRIZM Creative Community is sponsoring a “Painting with Glass” fused glass workshop in Frit Techniques for those with prior glass experience.
Presented by local artist Ann Hymel, participants can choose from one of two sessions – May 5 or May 7 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the “FUSED” Studio 114 W. South Boundary Suite B in Perrysburg.

Huntington Center feted Every year, concert industry magazine “Venues Today” comes out with the “Top Venues” issue, which ranks the top performing venues in regards to ticket sales.
The magazine’s April issue ranked the top Midwest venues (which includes 12 states) in terms of ticket sales for the 2010 calendar year.
In the 5,001-10,000 capacity, the Huntington Center came in first place, with $6,717,517 in ticket sales. The second place was the Meadow Brook Festival in Rochester, MI, which took in $1,999,690 in ticket sales.
“The support we have received from Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan has been outstanding. Toledo is truly on the map as a concert destination and competes well even against larger venues in the Midwest.” said SMG General Manager Steve Miller of the Huntington Center.
Wine & Cheese benefit The Wood County Humane Society is hosting its annual Wine & Cheese Benefit with Live and Silent Auctions May 20 from 7 to 10:30 p.m. at Nazareth Hall.
The popular event with music, dancing and fun in a beautiful setting is a major fundraiser for the humane society.
Auctioneer Jerry Anderson of WTOL will conduct the live auction of vacations, balloon rides, art and more. There will also be a silent auction with dozens of high quality items and services.
