The Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge has scheduled a full slate of programs for March beginning with a program on “Migratory Birds and Wind Turbines” March 6 at 2 p.m. Did you know that the Lake Erie marsh region of northwest Ohio is considered globally important to migratory birds and the people who enjoy them? Strong, consistent winds also make the region attractive to wind energy developers. Join Black Swamp Bird Observatory’s Kimberly Kaufman and Mark Shieldcastle, as well as noted bird expert Kenn Kaufman for a thought-provoking program on “Migratory Birds and Wind Turbines” at the refuge’s visitor center. The program is free and open to the public. Other programs include:

Naturally Speaking: “Ohio’s Bald Eagles,” March 13 2 p.m. Laura Bonneau, Visitor Services Specialist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will present the program, which will focus on the bald eagle’s natural history and its amazing success story. The free, informative presentation is part of Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge Association’s “Naturally Speaking” seminar series, held on the second Sunday of each month (excluding holidays) at the refuge’s visitor center.

Owl Prowl, Fridays March 11 and March 25, 7:30 p.m. Are you curious about whooo’s calling in the woods? Learn about owls and their natural history, find out what owls eat and what makes them special, and then if weather permits, head out on the refuge and try to find some owls. This is a free, fun event for the family. Space is limited. Call Laura Bonneau at 419-898-0014 to register.

Auto Tour, March 19, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Drive through seven miles of the refuge that are normally closed to the public. Drive at your own pace along a well-marked route, following a self-guided tour brochure found at the route entrance. At the visitor’s center, explore hands-on exhibits and watch a short film about the natural and cultural history of the Lake Erie marsh ecosystem and the Great Black Swamp.

For more information about these or other Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge programs, visit ww.fws.gov/midwest/ottawa or call 419-898-0014.

The Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge entrance is located 15 miles east of Toledo or 16 miles west of Port Clinton on SR 2.
