Genoa Civic Theatre is looking for a few FrUiTCaKeS
 
The Genoa Civic Theatre will hold auditions for “FrUiTCaKeS,” a comedy by Julian Wiles, Sept. 14 and 15 at 7 p.m. at the theatre, 509-1/2 Main St., Genoa.

There are roles for four men, four women, six boys and seven girls. Actors between the ages of 8 and 80 are invited to audition. For more information, call 419-862-2629.

The theatre’s new season will include the production of “FrUiTCaKes” Nov. 14 to 23; “Nun-crackers,” a musical comedy by Dan Goggin March 6 to 15; and “Christmas Belles,” a comedy by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten, May 15 to 24.

Butterfly send-off

The naturalists of Maumee Bay State Park will present insight into the magical migratory jour-ney of the monarch butterfly at the Monarch Festival Aug. 31 at noon at the Milton B. Trautman Nature Center, located near the Quilter Lodge.

Festivities will include games, an informational slide show, butterfly crafts, cookie decorating and a monarch tagging demonstration as hundreds of monarch butterflies are released for their migration to Mexico.

The demonstrations are free of charge, however, there will be a $3 wristband fee for participa-tion in the children’s crafts. Proceeds from the wristbands will be donated to the Monarch Butter-fly Sanctuary Foundation.

The Oregon Community Theatre will host a Wine Tasting Event at Cousino’s Navy Bistro at The Docks Sept. 11 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

The event will feature an eclectic assortment of wines and hors d’oeuvres, a live auction con-ducted by local television personality Jerry Anderson and a wide variety of silent auction items.

All proceeds will be used to “fly” Peter Pan in to Oregon’s Fassett Auditorium Nov. 7-8 and 14-16. Tickets are $25 per person and are available by calling 419-691-1398. For information, visit www.oregoncommunitytheatre.org.


Church sponsoring home tour

St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oak Harbor is sponsoring a Tour of Homes and Gar-dens Sept. 7 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Homes on this year’s tour include the homes of Jim and Sue Barns, 130 S. Brookside Dr.; Brad and Julie Hemminger, 11775 W. River Lane; Dewayne and Tracie Henson, 524 N. Locust St.; Pastor and Sue Hunsinger, 122 Ottawa St.; Mike and Molly Judge, 140 S. Brookside Dr.; Richard and Laura Kohring, 259 S. Manor Court; and Jerry and Kelly Witt, 120 S. Brookside Dr.

Brochures, which will serve as admission tickets, are on sale for $10 in the church office at 118 Ottawa St., at Druckenmiller Insurance Agency and MLJ Hair Design in downtown Oak Har-bor. Brochures may also be purchased the day of the tour at each featured home.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will provide matching funds up to $500.


Honoring grandparents

In honor of all of Ottawa County Grandparents, Riverview HealthCare Campus in Oak Harbor will host a special Grandparents Day event Sept. 6 from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

Events planned include an antique tractor show on the front lawn, a quilting show and infor-mational demonstration, a free community pancake breakfast in the multi-purpose room beginning at 7:30 a.m., a fishing derby by the Portage River, story hour about Grandparent’s Day with “Miss Brenda,” a decorated bike parade, a kiddie tractor pull and free multi-generational photos in an old-fashioned setting.

In addition, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department will be on hand to fingerprint children for identification purposes and Ottawa County’s Canine Unit will visit with Aron the drug canine. Also, a scrapbooking event will start at 8 a.m. and continue for the entire day.

Grandparents Day Coloring Contest entries are available at Riverview. The deadline for the contest is Sept. 6 at 9:30 a.m. A “Best Grandparent in Ottawa County” Essay Contest will be held in conjunction with the event. Entrants should explain in 500 words or less why their grandparent is the very best Grandparent in Ottawa County. Entries are due no later than Sept. 4.

Live in the House

The Pemberville Freedom Area Historical Society will present the first concert in the “Live In The House” Concert Series featuring The North Coast Big Band Sept. 6 at 7:30 p.m.

The 16-piece band includes five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones, bass, piano and drums. Two of the musicians also sing with the Big Band. The repertoire has grown from five bor-rowed pieces to over 200 charts purchased by the Big Band. The collection includes traditional big band music popularized by the bands such as those led by Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington. Also in the Big Band’s collection are jazz arrangements and classic rock.

The series includes nine shows, held the first Saturday of each month from September through May. Information on all nine shows is available online at www.pembervilleoperahouse.org

Looking ahead…

Mark your calendars for the Elmore Autumn Festival, which will be held Sept. 27 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Ory Park, located in the downtown district.

This year’s festival will include an outdoor craft show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., a car show from noon to 4 p.m. and a motorcycle toy run, set to roll though town at 3 p.m.

There will also be kids’games, food, entertainment and health screenings with the St. Charles Mercy Health Van.
