At the TMA: The Psychedelic 60s
The Toledo Museum of Art will present “The Psychedelic 60s, Posters from the Rock Era” June 11 through Sept. 12 in the Canaday Gallery.

Take a trip back to a golden age of concert poster design that continues to influence artists today. The 150 posters on loan from the Houston Freeburg Collection, including 50 posters representing the height of black light designs, visually define American music in the years 1966–1971.

The artists, who were influenced by such movements as art nouveau, surrealism, pop and op art, include legendary Wes Wilson, considered the father of the 1960s rock poster movement; giants Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelly; Victor Moscoso, creator of the Family Dog logo; Detroit graphic  designer David Singer; and Lee Conklin, who made more than 30 posters to promote acts at San Francisco's legendary Fillmore concert hall.

The posters make an immediate impact because of their innovative use of text,  psychedelic colors, coded messages, and the musicians they promote: Jimi  Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, the Byrds, Fleetwood Mac, Cream, Big Brother & the Holding Company, and Joan Baez, among others.

The exhibition is free.

SR 2 rest area open
Just in time for the start of summer, holiday travelers now have the chance to use the Ohio Department of Transportations’ (ODOT) newly renovated rest area facility on SR 2, just east of SR 358 in Ottawa County.

The updated facility includes new plumbing, electrical fixtures, roofing and flooring. The toilet areas have been expanded and now include a separate family restroom. Energy efficiencies have been added such as on-demand water heaters, low-flow toilets and more efficient heating and cooling systems. The renovated building is also ADA compliant.

Another “green” addition to the facility will be the installation of a wind turbine, to supply a portion of the power to the rest area. This will be the first of its kind in the state of Ohio. ODOT expects the turbine to be installed in July.

Corny or “stalking?”
The Corn Maze at The Butterfly House in Whitehouse has been busy brainstorming on new maze designs for the 2010 season. Planners are very happy with our decision on what the maze will look like for 2010. Once they receive approval, the maze will be designed with the theme of “American Idol” runner-up Crystal Bowersox.

The past maze themes at The Corn Maze include “Life Cycle of the Butterfly” (2007); Sarah Palin (2008) and  Toledo Walleye Logo (2009).
