hundreds of rare and unusual species of trees, shrubs and plants has announced that, for the first time, it will open its gates to visitors in the month of April.
“Since we opened to the public in 1991, we have always started our season on May 1 and we just felt like our members and guests have missed out on so much early spring beauty that is present in April,” said events coordinator Veronica Sheets.
Sheets noted that in the next few weeks, the gardens will be adorned with crocuses and daffodils blooming among the grove of ancient dawn redwood trees. Tulips, forsythia and hundreds of other flowering trees and shrubs, including more than 20 varieties of Japanese maple, many of which grow in the Japanese Garden, will also add their brilliant colors to the spring landscape.
According to assistant director David Halsey, the nearly 20,000 annuals that are on display each year at the gardens won’t be planted until May, however, “There is still an amazing display of beauty here in the springtime that we’re excited for folks to get a chance to see for the first time.”
Schedel is also home to many pieces of sculpture, including several by well-known artists Barry Woods Johnston, Tuck Langland, Emanuel Enriquez and Toledoan Joanne Cousino. “Placement of sculpture throughout the grounds demonstrates the harmony between art and nature in an amazing way,” Halsey added.
April hours will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Regular hours begin May 1, when the gardens will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.
In addition to garden tours, the Brown Welcome Center will also be open. Currently on display in the McAlear Gallery is an exhibit entitled, “Art from India,” which includes paintings by a number of Indian artists.
The Schedel Arboretum & Gardens is located at 19255 W. Portage River Rd. South in Elmore, just three minutes off Ohio Turnpike Exit 81. For more information call 419-862-3182 or visit www.schedel-gardens.org.
