Radio “experiment” gone right ends in a milestone

What began as a Toledo-area radio “experiment” celebrates its 15th anniversary Aug. 4.

K100’s (WKKO-99.9FM) morning radio team of Gary Shores and Harvey J. Steele will mark 15 years as a team, and they continue as Toledo’s current longest-running continuous morning team on air from 5-10 a.m. on K100.

The “experiment” was to pair Shores and Steele as an afternoon team, a first for Toledo music-oriented stations, in the summer of 1994.

Gary Shores, longtime K100 program director, and Harvey J. Steele, assistant program director, started their 3-6 p.m. show, and through thick and thin, sickness and health, they have maintained a consistent number-one rating. Just a year into their pairing, Shores & Steele won the coveted Air Personality of the Year Award from the Country Music Association.

In October 2000, Shores & Steele moved to the morning show on K100 and continued to top the ratings year after year. As they get ready to start their 16th consecutive year, they still aren’t used to getting up so early, but they are grateful for their success, they say.

“We’re the two luckiest people in radio. We love what we do,” Shores said. “In my case, radio was all I ever wanted to do. The same is true for Harvey. Growing up as a kid, all I did was listen to radio – WHK in Cleveland, The Big 8, Keener 13, WXYZ and most of the other Detroit stations. Yeah, this is definitely for me.

“And now here we are, wakin’ up Toledo, having fun, playing the best music on the radio, for the greatest listeners on Earth. We are truly blessed!” he said.

Steele agreed.
“The thing that I am most proud of is the hundreds of non-profit and public service organizations and community events we’ve been fortunate to have been – and will continue to be – involved with,” Steele said. “That’s why we got into this business.

“To have a job that you enjoy doing every day and you feel that in your small way, you can make a difference in our community makes me proud… and it really eases the effect of the 3 a.m. alarm clock buzzing!” he said.
