The city of Oregon’s third annual Community Day will be held in conjunction with the Dream Cruise this year. In the past, both events have been very popular and the combination of the two should appeal to an even larger crowd.

In the past, Community Day has drawn anywhere from 500 to a 1,000 people and the Dream Cruise usually has 800 to 1000 attendees, according to Tina Evans, who is on the planning committee.

Community Day originated as a celebration of the city’s 50th anniversary and it was decided to host the event every year. The event will be held on Saturday Aug. 1 at the Oregon City Municipal Complex at 5330 Seaman Rd. The rain date is Sunday Aug 2.

“The purpose of Community Day is for the city of Oregon to have a day where we can show our appreciation to the community,” said Evans. The Dream Cruise “is really showing off your classic automobile,” said Mayor Marge Brown.

The event kicks off at 5p.m. with Donkey Baseball. The classic cars will cruise to Pearson Park at 6 p.m., followed by music. A Buddy Holly and Gene Pitney Impersonator band, Jerry Connelly and the Viceroys will perform at 7 p.m. The event will close with a fireworks display at 10 p.m., sponsored by BP- Husky Refining LLC.

In addition to a wide array of vendors, children’s activities will include clowns with balloons, face painting, a moonwalk , the D.A.R.E police car, a fire truck and a pirate ship. Finger printing will be available and the fire department will provide a fire safety trailer. The Challenger Learning Center host rocket launches.

There will also be a 50/50 raffle, with half the proceeds going to the band and the winner will receive the other half. According to Brown, last year, $2,000 was raised by the raffle.

“[I hope people take away] pride in their city, we have a great city… I’m proud to be the mayor and very happy for our community,” said Brown.

Sponsors include Eagles Nest Sweet Retreats, Bakers Classic Paint and Body Shop, Burger King, Cousnio’s Steak House, Frisch’s, Ralphies, All American Pizza, Ram Exterminators, Belle Tire, 93.5 WRQN and K100 WKKO.
