Tools for School 2013 effort a success

Every year, since 2002, The Salvation Army-Port Clinton Service Unit has offered Tools for School, a school supply assistance program in August. This year, the program served 617 local students with school supplies and a new backpack.

Members of the Waite High School class of 1951 get together the second Monday of every month  for lunch and fellowship. Those attending on a recent Monday at the Oregon Inn include Fran Goodman, Milt Gephart and wife, Betty Derr, Skip Michener, John Gercak, Darlene Lane, Rollie Wagner and wife, Jim Holder and wife, John Warner, Nancy Rend and Rich Morgan. Trips abroad among retired teacher’s fondest career memories

When school supplies went on sale, for a brief moment, Jolene Kopena had an urge to stock up on a few things. Then it hit her – no more pencils, no more books, no more students’ dirty looks for her.

Kopena retired at the end of the last school year after a 35-year career with Genoa Schools, where she had taught English, German and most recently, Spanish. Before coming to Genoa, she had taught in Continental Schools.
