Waite student attends National Youth Leadership Summit

Over the course of the summit, students worked collectively to create a report focused on what educators should consider when designing strategies and programs aimed at improving student achievement; as well as helping business and community leaders, policy makers, and educators understand the issues that students believe to be important for improving student success and strengthening the education system as a whole.  

The culmination of the Summit was the students’ presentation of the report to the over 2,000 attendees of the NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference.  

Middlebrooks is a participant of the Waite GEAR UP program and has earned all necessary GEAR UP Benchmark points in order to be awarded  a GEAR UP scholarship.  She will be attend Youngstown State University in the fall, where she will pursue her goal of becoming a social worker.

Buckeye Girls and Boys State
Four Clay High School seniors were chosen by Christ Dunberger Post to serve as delegates to Buckeye Boys and Girls State conventions.

They included Heather Klatt, who was elected to board of elections and city council and Britney Striberny who was elected to state school board at Buckeye Girls State, held at Ashland University.

Matt Swaim was elected city law director and Paul Zalar was elected director of parks and recreation at Buckeye Boys State, held at Bowling Green State University.

Scholarships
Christopher Dippman, of Oregon, was recently awarded a scholarship from the Garden Club Forum of the Toledo District, Inc., to further his studies in the turf management field. Each year, the organization awards two scholarships to encourage the study of horticulture, forestry and/or turf management. Dippman is enrolled at Owens Community College where he is studying turf management.

Jeffrey Mack, a 2006 graduate of Clay High School, received a $2,000 E.S. Wagner Company Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year. Mack is a junior at The Ohio State University. E.S. Wagner, a civil and heavy highway general contractor based in Oregon, awards $10,000 annually in scholarship funds to qualifying dependents of company employees. Recipients are chosen based on academic achievements and extra-curricular involvement.
