Several Owens Community College students have been honored for their excellence in higher education, earning membership into the Alpha Omega Pi Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.

Phi Theta Kappa was established in 1918 by the presidents of eight Missouri junior colleges for women. In 1924, the international organization was extended to include all two-year colleges. To date, more than one million individuals have been inducted into the international honor society.

Selection criterion for students receiving the honor is based upon enrollment in a two-year college, completing a minimum number of course hours set forth by the individual chapter, achieving a 3.5 grade point average and exemplifying academic excellence, as determined by faculty.

More than 200 people gathered at Terra Community College Sept. 14 for a groundbreaking ceremony for the college’s new Skilled Trades Center.

Terra President Marsha S. Bordner, Ph.D., welcomed the visitors and Helene Zielinski, chairperson of the board of trustees, presented a short historical perspective of Terra.

Featured speakers included Ohio Treasurer Kevin Boyce and Bill Russell, associate vice chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents.

The Skilled Trades Center will be approximately 23,225 square feet at a total cost of about $3.5 million. Funding for the project is from a combination of state and local funds. The building will house state-of-the-art labs including HVAC, welding, power technologies and truck driving.

This is the first new building on the Terra campus since the Early Learning Center opened in 1997.

Construction is expected to last a year. The building vacated by these labs will then be renovated into an allied health wing and a music wing.

Teachers throughout the Portage River Watershed recently had the opportunity to join Dennis Clement of Ohio EPA to learn more about water quality monitoring.

The workshop was a “kick-off” for new and current schools that test along the Portage River in the fall and spring. After completing the workshop, teachers involved can apply to become a “Qualified Data Collector” Level 1 with the EPA.

The Portage River Monitoring Program began in 1994 and has kept going through various grants and donations from private individuals and businesses.
