Marine Mechanics class seeking new trainees
The Marine Mechanics Skills for Life class, touted as a model for other communities around the nation, is scheduled to begin its 11th class Nov. 9.

As many as 16 participants can be enrolled in the new class.

Supported by several local marinas, the classes are held at the Ottawa County Resource Centre, SR 163, Oak Harbor, Monday through Thursday 5:30-9:30 p.m. The 16-week program is offered to the community through a collaborative effort of the Ottawa County Community Improvement Corporation, Penta Career Center and WSOS Community Action Commission, Inc.

Earlier this  year, the Kateri Catholic School System was formed, uniting St. Thomas Aquinas and Sacred Heart schools in Toledo, St. Jerome School in Walbridge and Cardinal Stritch High School with the nine parishes in the Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Deanery of the Diocese of Toledo.

The mission was clear – to ensure a sustained commitment to the high standards of Catholic education in Toledo and its surrounding eastern communities. But just who was Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha?

In search of an effective and engaging way to introduce the patron to students, faculty, staff, parents and the community, school leaders last week took off on a weeklong motorcycle adventure dubbed “The Kateri Pilgrimage.”

Like many high school seniors, Ryan Hook is looking forward to college and the

opportunity to strike out on his own, to develop his talents and pursue his passion – musical theater.

It’s not that he isn’t enjoying this senior year at Clay High School. His life is busy with family and friends, classroom studies, marching band, cross country and participating in theater productions with the Limelighters.

But over his summer vacation, Ryan got an alluring glimpse of what his college freshman year might be like during a four-week adventure in the Big Apple as part of the Tisch Summer High School Musical Theater Performance Program at CAP21, a for-credit musical theatre intensive offered at New York University.

At its foundation, it is a collegiate course condensed into four weeks offered to select seniors who are serious about pursing a professional career in musical theatre.
