For quite some time this summer, Erek Hansen was feeling blue – very blue, in fact – but for the Jerusalem Elementary student, that was definitely a good thing.

From his Curtice home, Erek organized a denim drive that brought in a mountain of jeans – 1.684 pairs, as part of National Geographic Kids magazine’s effort to win the Guinness Book of World Record for the Most Items of Clothing Collected.

The nationwide drive brought in 33,088 items of clothing, including jeans, shirts, jackets and hats, which were displayed in a massive art installation at Union Station, Washington, D.C. through Aug. 27.

The tuition (price) is right for local women
Felicia Ervin of Bowling Green and Cora Snare of McComb were the winners of the “Tuition is Right” contest hosted by Owens Community College and Clear Channel Radio’s 92.5 Kiss FM, 104.7 WIOT and 103.7CKY. Each will attend Owens tuition-free during 2009-10.

In addition, Donna Myers of Walbridge and Monica Schalk of New Riegel finished as runners-up in the contest and won one semester of free tuition each.

Myers, 47, has an associate’s degree in drafting and design from North Central State College in Mansfield, but in the last two years, she’s lost two jobs - one in Michigan and this past April in the greater Toledo area as a structural steel detailer.

Annual Waite Golden Years Luncheon set
The annual Waite Golden Years Luncheon for alumni who have celebrated their 50th year reunions (1914-1959) will be held Sept. 15 at St. George’s Banquet Hall, 740 Glenwood Rd., Rossford.
