A new group, called Two Villages, was formed in January by eight members of the Woodmore community to help parents.

The name of the group is a twist on the African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child” and it represents all people in Woodville and Elmore, including civic groups, churches, school groups, businesses and individuals. It was started because these people “recognize the suffering of our family, friends, and neighbors as they – and we – grieve the loss of several young lives,” says Jayne Klett, chair of the group.

“We are committed to finding out what we don’t know about the lives and pop culture of our children so that we can create a community where they can grow in healthy and safe ways,” Klett said.

For Lake Middle School eighth-grader David Henninger, these words not only embody the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, they also offer the promise of a better world for his and future generations.

As part of the Ohio Civil Rights Commission’s Art, Essay and Multimedia Contest, David’s social studies teacher Nicole Bazzoli recently challenged her students to interpret the following quote from Dr. Martin Luther King:

Owens Community College, along with five other community colleges and BioOhio, will receive a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration to implement the Ohio Bioscience Industry Workforce Preparedness project.

The three-year project will provide training to 660 displaced or underemployed workers in declining industries to help them become better equipped for careers in Ohio’s growing biomedical industry. In addition, 40 incumbent workers will receive advanced training to be able to move into higher-level jobs, creating new entry-level job opportunities for unemployed adults.

Other partners in the statewide project consortium include Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, Columbus State Community College, Cuyahoga Community College, Lakeland Community College and Sinclair Community College, with strong support from the Ohio Board of Regents. CAEL (The Council for Adult and Experiential Learning), a national non-profit organization focused on workforce development and adult learning, will serve a technical assistance role.
