using the bus safety skills they learned at Lake Township’s recent Safety Town program.

During the week of Aug. 2 to 6, the young kindergartners-to-be learned about a variety of safety topics that will help them stay safe at home, on the bus and at school.

Topics covered included how to place a 9-1-1 call correctly, stranger danger, gun safety, railroad safety, playground safety, fire safety, the dangers of electricity, medical/health dangers and school bus safety. Highlights of the week included taking a bus ride around the town, spraying a fire hose, making first aid bags and practicing how to “Stop, Drop and Roll,” as well as how to exit a room filled with smoke.

Some extra special four-legged guests also attended Safety Town all week. “Daisy,” “Huskers” and “Preacher” from K-9 Comfort came each day to welcome the students and ease any anxieties about being away from home, especially in the aftermath of the June 6 tornado.

The eventful week concluded with picnic shared with family and friends, and a graduation ceremony where students received safety diplomas signed by Lake Township Police Chief Mark Hummer.

Just in time for the opening of fall semester classes Aug. 23, workers put the finishing touches on the new Skilled Trades Center at Terra Community College.

“We’ve watched the new building literally rise from the ground up over the past year and we’re anxious now for our students to experience the state-of-the-art labs and latest technology that the Skilled Trades Center offers,” said Lisa Jozwiak, Vice President of Academic Affairs.

The Skilled Trades Center is approximately 23,225 square feet at a total cost of about $3.5 million. Funding for the project was a combination of state and local funds.

The building is home to the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC), welding and power technologies labs and the Terra Truck Driving Academy. There are also faculty and staff offices, five classrooms – four with Smart Board technology – and a student lounge.

Steve Bender and Tim Roth, both faculty in the HVAC program, have been on site to help with equipment location. They are excited to get started with classes.

“For the most part, students will see all new equipment including some of the newest hybrid systems out there,” Roth said.

It was a bittersweet celebration as members of the Lake High School graduating

class of 2010 received their diplomas at Owens Community College just days after their school was destroyed by a tornado.

The class chose as their motto, “Remember Yesterday, Live for Today, Dream for Tomorrow” – words that seemed especially apropos after the catastrophe the grads will remember for decades to come.

This past weekend, a small group of alumni who graduated from Lake seven decades ago got together to remember yesterday, catch up on their “todays” and to discuss plans for next year’s get-together.

Among the alumni from the Lake class of 1940 who got together July 24 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stony Ridge were Earl Schulte, Phyllis Belch, Gladys Perry and Mildred Ford. George Tighe, who started school with the group but moved away before graduation attended as a guest.
