St. Boniface Catholic Parish found that its famous all-you-can-eat fish fry had become so popular it had outgrown the undercroft beneath the church.

The new “venue” in the school gymnasium reflects how the event has grown and changed over the years.

The fish fry started in 2005 as a necessary fundraiser to help St. Boniface School meet expenses. Each Friday during Lent, they served about 250 dinners of fish with a side of cole slaw. As the menu expanded, the fish fry’s reputation spread and the crowds of customers grew. The undercroft was just too small to comfortably accommodate 500 meals a night.

Thirteen year-old Erek “EcoErek” Hansen has launched his annual campaign to keep unwanted denim and shoes out of the local landfills.

“I’m excited to get started collecting unwanted denim and shoes again to recycle,” the Curtice youth said. “I am also looking forward to seeing people out at the drives.”

Hansen welcomes stained, holey, past-their-prime denim clothing items and unwanted, worn out, too-big, or too-small shoes of any kind, condition, color or size.

Massive restructuring among cash-strapped school districts has flooded area communities with an inventory of shuttered buildings.

Some of those old school buildings have found new life in the community. Still, some say, the area is reaching its saturation point for this increasingly familiar type of real estate sales.

The most recent local example of this trend is the old Camper Building on Main Street in Genoa that went on the auction block earlier this March. Scott J. Bowe, of Woodville, submitted the winning $10,000 bid, but the property sale has not closed yet, according to Chad Brough, of Chad Brough Auctioneer Services of Oak Harbor.
