Toledo Fire & EMS class to graduate 50
Fifty recruits from the Toledo Fire and EMS Academy will graduate at a ceremony May 31 at 6 p.m. at Owens Community College Center for Fine and Performing Arts.

The class represents one of the largest graduating classes in recent history. Graduating recruits who were already certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) trained for 12 weeks. All other recruits trained 19 weeks to earn their Firefighter and EMT certification.

The event is free and open to the public.

From Blue to Green 
In a recent collection drive, Owens Community College’s Environmental Club collected more than 250 denim items that will be given a new life as home insulation for disaster victims.

On May 26, the Environmental Club presented the denim items to Jerusalem Elementary fifth-grader “Eco Erek” Hansen to assist in his personal goal of collecting over 5,000 items for the “®Cotton. From Blue to Green.” program.

Last year, the 10-year-old collected 4,154 denim items.
 

St. Hedwig reunion
The 1961 graduating class of St. Hedwig School, Toledo, will hold a 50-year reunion Aug. 28, with a Mass, tour of the school and a dinner at Shorty’s on Monroe Street.

CSI Youth Camp
Youths age 13 through 17 can hone their detective skills and learn how the world of forensic science is used in solving a crime at Owens Community College’s first-ever CSI Youth Camp June 6 to 8.

The camp, which will be offered through Owens’ Workforce and Community Services at the Center for Emergency Preparedness, will be held Monday-Wednesday from 8 a.m. to noon.

Working with a forensic team, student detectives will have the opportunity to enter a re-creation of an unusual and challenging crime scene where an instructor will direct and coach them as they use deductive skills, teamwork, math and science to solve the crime. Campers will be trained in the basic process of evidence collection that includes using fingerprints, fibers and hair, blood spatter (simulated), DNA, and tire and shoe prints.

• June 9 – 9 a.m. to noon – “Keep That Job.” Learn how to complete job applications and obtain information on completing the W-4 tax form and how it influences take-home income.

• June 16 – 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. – “Get a Job or a Better Job.” Discuss applications, resumes, interviewing, networking, the Internet and more.

• June 23 – 9 a.m. to noon – “Ace That Interview.” Get information about knowing and selling yourself, conducting research and grooming for that interview.

Small business basics
The Ohio Small Business Development Center at Terra Community College is offering free, two-hour “Small Business Basics” seminars designed to answer questions about starting, buying or expanding a small business.

The seminar will help entrepreneurs avoid costly mistakes and unnecessary steps. Participants will learn the basics of name registration, licensing, taxes, zoning, business entities, employees, insurance, financing and business planning.

The June schedule includes:
• June 1 – 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Ottawa County Improvement Corporation (conference room), 8043 W. SR 163, Oak Harbor.

• June 22 – 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Terra Community College, Building B, Room 101, 2830 Napoleon Rd., Fremont.
