Penta Career Center students and staff received top awards at the SkillsUSA Ohio Championships held April 29 and 30 at the Ohio State Fairgrounds in Columbus.
Nick McCullough, (Eastwood High School), a junior in Penta’s Public Safety/Criminal Justice program, was elected
president of Ohio SkillsUSA for the 2011-2012 school year. He campaigned for the office by preparing posters and buttons and giving a speech. McCullough competed against six other students from across Ohio in an election during the state competition.
Top awards Seven Penta students earned top awards in various contests during the SkillsUSA Ohio Championships.

Gold medal (first-place) winners included seniors Jodi Hanudel (Northwood High School) and Alexis Frisch (Oak Harbor High School), both students in Penta’s Digital Video Production program for the video product development contest; and Austin Flores (Northwood High School, who lives in Sylvania), a senior in Penta’s Culinary Arts program, for the culinary arts contest.
Junior Jessica Tolliver (Genoa High School), Public Safety/EMT-Fire Science program earned a bronze medal (third place). In addition, junior Caitlin Stickler (Lake High School), Public Safety/Criminal Justice program, earned a bronze medal for the American Spirit contest.
Hanudel, Frisch and Flores qualify for the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference to be held June 19 to 24 in Kansas City, Missouri.
In addition, Matthew Herrig, of Pemberville, instructor of Public Safety/Criminal Justice at Penta, was named Ohio SkillsUSA Advisor of the Year.
The Penta Career Center school district also received the Ohio SkillsUSA 2011 Outstanding Achievement Award for exceptional leadership in the areas of work, student involvement and chapter level activities.
SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations.
