Oxygen – we all need it, but how much does the average person know about it?
Two Northwood High School students produced a video about the elemental element that netted them top honors and a $5,000 grant for the school.
On April 8, NHS received a $5,000 science department grant for the Chemical Heritage Foundation’s “It’s Elemental” video contest. The grant was presented by The Dow Chemical Company, in celebration of 2011 as the International Year of Chemistry.
Juniors Zach Vickers’ and Ben Slaughterbeck’s video entry took on the form of “Oxygen News” which they delivered on a “network” they dubbed 15.999 (oxygen’s Atomic mass).

Vickers served as anchor, discussing “news” that included information about oxygen. A “crawl” along the bottom of the screen offers facts about the element. Slaughterbeck delivered weather and sports updates, both of which also included oxygen information and facts.
Theirs was chosen as one of 20 finalists from more than 700 entries. Teachers of students whose videos ranked among the top 20 were invited to submit essays proposing improvements to their science departments. Chemistry teacher Geoff Milewski’s essay described how the grant money would be used to improve the science department and encourage the interest in chemistry among the students.
Ultimately, the video by Z & B Productions was chosen as one of eight winners in this category and one of 11 winners overall.
The grant money will be used to purchase six deluxe Vernier LabQuest chemistry packages, state-of-the art data-collection technology that will “transform Northwood High School’s chemistry labs,” Milewski said.
The equipment will also be used by the art department to highlight some of the chemistry aspects of various art projects.
