Area students SkillsUSA regional winners High school students enrolled in career-technical programs at Penta Career Center earned top awards at the recent Regional SkillsUSA Competition at Sentinel Career & Technical Center in Tiffin.
Four Penta students earned first place and received gold medals. They include Emily Nungester (Elmwood), Computer-Aided Design, for the architectural drafting contest; Diana Abbas (Genoa), Digital Video Production, for the photography contest; Jacob Moos (Rossford), Welding, for the welding contest; and Colten Palmer (Genoa), Public Safety/Criminal Justice, for the job skill demonstration contest.
Six students earned second place and silver medals, these students included: Tony Delgado (Springfield), John Garcia (Lake), Aaron Horn (Springfield), all from Construction Remodeling and John Huntley (Springfield), Construction Masonry, for the team works contest; Laura Luckey (Woodmore), Exercise Science/Sports Health Care, for the medical math contest; and Ryan Murphy (Eastwood), Automotive Technology for the automotive technology contest.
Third place (bronze medals) were awarded to: Lucas Balistreri (Bowling Green), Automotive Technology, for the automotive technology contest; Destiny Garza (Rossford), Exercise Science/Sports Health Care, for the job skill demonstration contest; Brandon Hertzfeld (Anthony Wayne), A+ Computer Technology for the computer maintenance contest; Shonte Lind (Springfield), Cosmetology, for the nail care contest; Nick McCullough (Eastwood), Public Safety/Criminal Justice, for the prepared speech contest; Ryan Murtha (Perrysburg), Green Energy Management, for the extemporaneous speech contest: and Nicole Villarreal (Genoa), Medical Technologies, for the nurse assisting contest.
All the students qualify for the Ohio SkillsUSA Championships in Columbus, Ohio on April 29 and 30.
SkillsUSA is a national organization for high school students who are training for careers in trade, industrial, technical, and health-related occupations. The organization provides quality educational experiences such as leadership, teamwork, citizenship, and character development skills.

Peace Officer graduates Fifty students were recognized as Ohio Basic Peace Officer Training Academy graduates at Owens Community College April 18.
Founded in 1970, the Basic Peace Officer Training Academy is offered on the Toledo-area and Findlay-area campuses in cooperation with the Ohio Peace Officers Training Commission. As part of the seven-month program, students take courses in patrol operations, firearms, defensive tactics and criminal investigation. Participants are instructed by local police officers, sheriff’s deputies and corrections officers, as well as state and federal agents.
Following successful completion of the academy, graduates become eligible for certification as an Ohio peace officer. In addition, coursework earned by police academy graduates will apply toward an associate degree at Owens in law enforcement.

Inducted Forty-eight Terra Community College students were inducted March 23 into the Alpha Mu Epsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, a national two-year college honor society.
Among the inductees were Matthew Smith, of Gibsonburg; Kellie Fowler, Michael Ontko and Lindsay Wagner, of Oak Harbor; Aaron Hunt and DeAnna Mason, of Woodville.
Nina Schyllander, Assistant Professor in Mathematics at Terra, serves as the chapter’s advisor while Barbara Jackson, Executive Assistant to the President, is the co-advisor.
Phi Theta Kappa recognizes and encourages scholarship among associate degree students who are invited to membership on the basis of scholarly achievement, leadership, citizenship, character and faculty recommendation.
Outstanding Eastwood Middle School student Tony Bolton has won the Linette Butler Award for being the Outstanding Quiz Bowl student in Wood County. Tony has had a terrific academic year. He also has advanced in the Geography Bee competition to the highest levels.
