Spring Job Fair planned March 1 at Terra
Terra Community College Career Services will host the annual Spring Job Fair March 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Activities Center.

More than 35 employers are expected to participate, including Terra and its Kern Center, Ohio Highway Patrol, Diversified Insurance Service, Time Staffing, Teaching and Mentoring Communities, Hospice of Memorial Hospital, Sandco Workforce Solutions, YMCA of Sandusky County, Cedar Point, The Toledo Zoo, Renhill Group, NESCO Resource, First Choice Packaging, Guiding Hands Health Services, Ohio Veterans Home, Med 1Care, Kalahari Resort, African Safari Wildlife Park, Whirlpool, The UPS Store and Ottawa County Riverview Health Care, among others.

Those attending are encouraged to “dress to impress” and bring copies of their resumes to hand out.

Kindergarten sign-ups
Genoa Area Local Schools will kindergarten registration and screenings April 19, 20 and 21 at Brunner Elementary School. All parent information and registration forms will be given out at the screening sessions.

To be eligible for kindergarten, a child must be 5 years old by Sept. 30. All kindergarten students must be screened and registered to begin the 2011-12 school year.

To make an appointment, call Brunner Elementary after March 1 at 419-855-8373. Appointments will be offered on the above dates at 8 to 10 a.m., 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and 1:15 to 3:15 p.m. each day. Sessions are limited to 12 students each day.

A parent/guardian must accompany children during the entire registration and screening time. The child’s birth certificate, immunization records, Social Security card and custody papers, if applicable, should be brought to the appointment.


Gibsonburg sets kindergarten signups
Screening of kindergarten-age students in the Gibsonburg School District will be held March 29 and 30 at Hilfiker Elementary School in room 200. To be eligible to start kindergarten in the fall, a student must turn 5 on or before Aug. 1.

Screening appointments are available both days in the morning and afternoon. Parents will have an opportunity to meet the principal, teachers and other school personnel. Information concerning dental and physical examination forms will be distributed.

The child’s birth certificate, immunization record, Social Security card, two items proving residency and custody papers, if applicable.

Appointments may be made beginning March 7 by calling Jill at the elementary school at 419-637-7249 between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. No appointments will be scheduled before March 7.
  

CAGE hosts 7th Wildcat Bash
Woodmore-CAGE (Communities Achieving Goals for Extracurricular) will host their 7th Annual Benefit Fundraiser March 19 from 7 p.m. to midnight at Ole Zim’s, 1375 North SR 590, Gibsonburg.

The benefit will feature Midwest Dueling Pianos, appetizer buffets, wine tasting, cash bar (must be 21 to attend), live and silent auctions, and a sneak peek performance by the Woodmore Drama Club.

All proceeds from the benefit will go toward CAGE’s mission of providing new and upgraded extracurricular facilities to Woodmore schools.

“We are really shaking things up this year with an exciting new format and lower ticket prices,” said Vicki Selhorst, CAGE communications chairperson. “Our auction items are unique and some can only be found at the CAGE event, such as four tickets to sit with the OSU Marching Band at the OSU vs. Wisconsin football game this fall,” said David Nevergall, CAGE president. “People who have won the OSU tickets at prior CAGE benefits describe it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Tickets are $30 per person and can be purchased at Pills n’ Packages in Elmore and Woodville, or at Fremont Federal Credit Union in Woodville. “The event is open to everyone who wants to have a great night out and support a good cause,” Selhorst said. “I have also been encouraging Woodmore graduates to gather their old classmates and reserve tables for a mini class reunion.”

Woodmore-CAGE is currently constructing a new entry building to the Woodmore stadium, complete with ticket sales, concession areas, restrooms and storage.

Small Business Basics
The Ohio Small Business Development Center at Terra Community College is offering free, two-hour Small Business Basics seminars designed to answer questions about starting, buying or expanding a small business.

The seminar will help entrepreneurs avoid costly mistakes and unnecessary steps. Participants will learn the basics of name registration, licensing, taxes, zoning, business entities, employees, insurance, financing and business planning.

The seminar schedule includes:
March 2 – 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Ottawa County Improvement Corporation (conference room), 8043 W. SR 163, Oak Harbor.

March 23 – 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Terra Community College (Building B, Room 101), 2830 Napoleon Rd., Fremont.

The programs are free and open to the public.

Dinner theatre fundraiser
The Benton Carroll Salem Education Foundation is sponsoring a Dinner Theatre Fundraiser March 11.

The event will highlight the talent of the high school thespians and students in the Music Department in a presentation of the spring musical, “Annie Get Your Gun.”

The barbecue chicken dinner will be served from 6 to 7:15 in the Oak Harbor High School cafeteria. Carryout orders will be available from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The cost is $8 for a carryout dinner and $20 for a dine-in dinner plus a reserved ticket to the musical. A silent auction will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the auditorium lobby.

Funds raised will help the foundation in its mission to foster and promote learning above and beyond the scope of the everyday classroom.

St. Boniface sets open house
St. Boniface Catholic School, 215 W. Oak St., Oak Harbor, will hold an Open House March 1 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Parents, grandparents and children are invited to tour the school and meet the teachers and staff, who will be available to discuss curriculum, tuition payment schedules and scholarship needs.

Scholarships
The Zonta Club of Bowling Green is accepting applications for its 2011 scholarship. The club will provide a maximum $2,000 scholarship to a woman age 25 years or older.

The award recipient must be a resident of Wood County, show financial need, have earned a high school diploma or GED and be eligible to enroll or already be enrolled in a post-secondary program of study. A list of eligible post-secondary programs is listed as part of the application.

The Toledo Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will offer scholarships from the Dean Katherine Wemmer Trust fund for the academic year 2011-12.

Applicants must be female students enrolled for the 2011-12 academic year as:
• a full-time undergraduate student in her junior or senior year at UT.

• a full-time or part-time graduate student in any field at UT.

• a member of the Toledo Branch of AAUW who is doing post-baccalaureate work at the college/university of her choice.

In addition, the applicant must:

• be enrolled during the current academic year.

• have at least a 3.25 GPA.

• be available for an interview on April 13 on the UT campus.

The maximum award is $1,500 to be used for tuition, fees and books as needed. Application forms are available at www.womenscenter.utoledo.edu or www.financialaid.utoledo.edu/general_scholarship.htm. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. March 21.
