Penta Career Center’s Public Safety/Criminal Justice program, has earned one of the highest honors in high school career-technical education – first place in the National SkillsUSA Championships
Travis traveled to Kansas City, Mo. June 20-25 to participate in the criminal justice contest. He competed against 30 other high school students from across the U.S. to earn the top award, which was a gold medal. He qualified for the competition by earning first place in the same contest this past spring at the 2010 SkillsUSA Ohio Championships in Columbus.
At the National SkillsUSA Championships, Travis took part in a written exam and practical exercises in the areas of U.S. Constitutional Law, written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to handle an entry-level law enforcement position. In addition to earning a gold medal, he received a $10,000 scholarship to Brown Mackie College.
SkillsUSA is a national organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in technical, skilled and service occupations, including health occupations.
Phi Theta Kappa honorees Owens Community College students recently were honored for their excellence in higher education, earning membership into the Alpha Omega Pi Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society for the Spring Semester.
Selection criterion for students receiving the honor is based upon enrollment in a two-year college, completing a minimum number of course hours set forth by the individual chapter, achieving a minimum 3.5 grade point average and exemplifying academic excellence, as determined by faculty.

Woodmore Buckeye Girls Three Woodmore High School students were among young women from across the state who recently completed a week at the 64th Annual American Legion Auxiliary Buckeye Girls State.
Rebekkah Henck, Arika Michaelis and Kaitlin McTague participated in the fast-paced program of mock government at the county and city levels. As they arrived, they were assigned to one of two political parties. The students filed petitions for candidacy for a variety of offices from governor to city council and participated in the election process.
Henck served as director of law of Bombeck City, Michaelis served as the police chief of Hobart City and McTague held the position of state senator from Deal City.
The girls, who will be seniors this year, join the list of girls sponsored by the Elmore American Legion Auxiliary Unit #279. In more recent years, co-sponsorships have been afforded through the Woodville American Legion Auxiliary Unit #455 and the Ottawa County Republican Women.
Clay student chosen for Legion Girls Nation Clay High School student Morgan Hess was among the 98 young women chosen to attend the 64th American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation in Washington, D.C., July 17-24.
Two outstanding citizens, known as “senators,” are selected at the 49 Girls State sessions held across the country to represent their state at Girls Nation. The leadership conference is designed to provide practical insight into the working of government.
Hess was a member of the Nationalist Party at 2010 Ohio Girls State.
