Owens Community College students and a faculty member were recently recognized for their academic excellence and leadership within the community, earning membership into the Gamma Zeta Chapter of the Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society.
Associate Professor of English Lori Owens, of Bradner, was named an honorary inductee as a result of her longstanding commitment and support to developmental education at Owens.
Also, three current Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society members received a diamond pin in recognition of their continued pursuit of academic excellence at the highest level. They include Jennifer McLaughlin of Oregon, Brandy Ousley, of Toledo, and Michelle Tefft of Liberty Center.
Selection criterion for acceptance into the honor society is based upon students achieving a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average for two consecutive full-time semesters or three-four part-time semesters. In addition, individuals must have taken at least one developmental education course at Owens.

Family Center lauds students Three local students were awarded scholarships at the 13th annual Renaissance Gala “Black and White Ball” to benefit the East Toledo Family Center held April 24.
They include Ian Snider and Donald Leary (Waite) and Carrie Swartz (Cardinal Stritch).
Owens scholarships Two local school seniors were among the recipients of scholarships from Owens Community College’s Trustees’ Academic Excellence Scholarship Program.
Recipients and their intended course of study at Owens include: • Hallie Thompson of Oregon, a Clay High School graduate (business management); • Elizabeth Gardyza of Northwood, a Northwood High School graduate (undecided).
Newcomb Scholar Libby Carstensen, of Oregon, was named a Senior Newcomb Scholar by the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University.
The Newcomb Scholar award recognizes the three students in each class rank (freshman, sophomore, junior and senior) that hold the highest cumulative grade point averages among the seven departments within CFAES.
Carstensen, a student in animal sciences, will attend the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine this fall to pursue her goal of becoming a veterinarian.
32° Scottish Rite Scholarship Rachel Duncan, of Northwood, has received a 32° Scottish Rite Scholarship, awarded to qualified students in recognition of scholastic and all-around achievements.
32° Scottish Rite Scholarships are given to the children of 32° Masonic families, to young people who have been active in Masonic-related organizations such as DeMolay, Rainbow and Job’s Daughters, and to graduates of 32° Masonic Learning Centers for Children.
CMU graduate Jason Mlynek earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in Music Composition from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
Mlynek was awarded University Honors for his academic performance. He will spend the summer in New York City working for Internal Marketing Group and will return to Carnegie Mellon in the fall to complete his master’s degree.
His brother Shawn will transfer his graduate program to the University of Cincinnati Music Conservatory in the fall. He went on a mission trip to Ecuador in May and will study in Italy this summer.
Both are 2005 graduates of Clay High School.
A family affair When she received her diploma May 24, Natasha Grosjean joined a line of Clay High School graduates that goes back four generations.
Her older sister Amanda Siefke graduated in 2004. Both of her parents, David Grosjean (1979) and Michelle Metzker (1984) are Clay graduates, as are all of their siblings (Dave has three sisters and two brothers), Michelle has four brothers).
Michelle's father (Natasha’s grandfather) Donald Metzker (1957) and both of his siblings are Clay High graduates, and her great-grandfather - Donald's father, Edward Metzker (integral in the founding of the City of Oregon) and his second wife (Natasha’s great-grandmother), Ethel Amsler were in Clay High School’s third graduating class, receiving their diplomas in 1932.
This fall, Natasha will join the pre-veterinary program at Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio.
