On September 24, 2009, friends, colleagues and family gathered to dedicate the Wynn Elementary School Media Center to Don Charlton, who served as Wynn’s principal from 1969-1990.

In celebration of the event, Mayor Marge Brown proclaimed the day as “Don Charlton Day.”

Throughout his career, Charlton demonstrated a love of reading and learning that encouraged teachers and students. He was known for promoting “teachable moments.”

In addition to the academic arena, Charlton was instrumental in the beginning of outdoor education, girls’ basketball, gymnastics and the creation of a nature center on the Wynn School playground.

His compassion for the students and community created the well-known motto “Wynn Pride,” which remains today. This motto unites the students, staff and community in a partnership for excellence in education.

Today Charlton continues to serve the community by being a member of the Oregonian Club, Oregon/Jerusalem Historical Society and GAF Swiss Club. He is a board member for Unison, and serves on the Oregon Tree Commission and the Health and Welfare committee, which coordinates the Annual Christmas Basket Program.
