Lake Middle School student has “grand” time in Ala.
Trenton Besgrove, a sixth-grader at Lake Middle School, participated in the Quarter Midget Eastern Grands in Huntsville, Ala., July 19-25.

There were approximately 500 cars participating in the weeklong event, as boys and girls from across the country gathered to race in the “Grands”

Drivers were given two days to practice before the qualifying race July 21. Besgove raced in three divisions –   senior stock car, light mod, and light B.

His best finish was the senior stock race finishing in second place and earning a trophy about 5-1/2 feet tall.

Besgrove has been racing for four  years and has traveled to California, New Jersey, North Carolina, Michigan, Indiana and Connecticut as well as all over Ohio.

Academic honors

Lake band members selected
Five members of the Lake High School band were selected to participate in the All-Ohio State Fair Band. They included Chris Rollins and Kyler Lucas, percussion; Meghan Mullins, trombone; Christina Hurst, clarinet; and Liz Anzaldua, bass clarinet. The students joined others from around the state to rehearse and perform during the Ohio State Fair, held July 29 to Aug. 9 in Columbus.


Grand champion
Ten-year-old Jenna Goodman, of Genoa, had the distinction of having her steer, Buddy, judged grand champion at the 2009 Pemberville Free Fair. Her little sister Darcie, also exhibited a steer.

Jenna also entered her steer in the junior showmanship competition and won reserve champion showman in that class. Her 1,240-pound steer was purchased by Frobose Meats, Marsh Funeral Home and Gleaner Life Insurance Co. and brought Jenna a record-setting $4.10 per pound.

Jenna is a fifth-grader at Allen School.


Scholarships
Several local students were among 11 recipients of $500 scholarships awarded by the Schwaben Verein, German American Festival Society, Inc. 

Schwaben Verein Scholarships were awarded to Patrick Lawrence, Eric Lohmann and Kristen Scott, of Toledo; Chris Pfouts of Curtice; and Shane Pfouts, of Walbridge.

The Adolph Mueller Scholarships were awarded to Melissa Pfeifer, of Toledo and Breann Pfouts, of Walbridge.

The Chris Ziegler Scholarship was awarded to Bryan Pfouts, of Walbridge.
