Spencer Guerrero, of Northwood, received a $1,500 Buckeye CableSyste/Telemundo Scholarship of the Toledo Community Foundation, awarded annually to graduating high school students of Hispanic heritage who are permanent residents of Buckeye CableSystem’s Toledo service area.
Guerrero, a 2009 graduate of Northwood High School, will attend Ohio University where he hopes to study athletic training/physical therapy.
At NHS, Guerrero was selected for the Northwest Ohio District Honors Choir and was a member of the All Ohio State Fair Youth Choir. He was selected Most Outstanding Choir Member of the year and participated in both Youth leadership Toledo and YIPEE (Youth in Philanthropy Encouraging Excellence).
He was also selected as HOBY (Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership) Ambassador for Northwest Ohio and as a Buckeye boys State delegate.
Scholarship applicants are required to have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and submit an essay addressing the theme, “I’m Proud to be an Hispanic American in Ohio.”

Student Government officers named
Twenty-eight Owens Community College students were named to new Student Government leadership positions for the 2009-10 academic year.
Each individual will serve a one-year term and represent the Owens student body as Student Government officers. Owens business management major Aurelius (Chris) Taylor of Toledo and pre-nursing major Jessica Platz of Delta received the majority vote for president and vice president, respectively.
Among the others elected to the college’s student government are Donney McMullin, Lorraine Makay, Hesbon Ombongi, Rachel Wismer, Richard Bethel, Nikyle Fitzgerald, Debra Morales, Sarah Burgess, Alisha Bell, Jennifer Brobst, Patricia Zeigler, Cindy Klinger, Shalisha Russell, Anthony Doherty and Rita Perkins, of Toledo, as well as Penny Patterson, of Pemberville.
Owens’ Student Government members represent the student population on both the Toledo-area and Findlay-area campuses and engage in various social, political, academic and administrative initiatives. They also act as liaison sbetween the student body and the college administration, the overall Owens community, governmental representatives and organizations, and other individuals and organizations.
