The Eastwood High School Tri-M Music Honor Society Chapter #5458 is one of 10 Ohio schools selected by application for the 2009 Ohio Arts Day, an annual arts awareness day to recognize the Ohio legislature for their funding of the Ohio Arts Council. The event is sponsored by the Ohio Citizens for the Arts Foundation.
Eastwood Tri-M members selected to represent the chapter at the Ohio Arts Day are Kyle Henry, Michelle Renollet, Lori Michel, Jessica Schulte, Marissa Borcherding-Jacobs and Rebecca Shirling.
The first segment of Arts Day was a school visit by State Rep. Randy Gardner on Feb. 23. The visit included a tour of the arts facilities, viewing student artwork and listening to several student performances. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss arts education and funding with Rep. Gardner. After the visit, Janelle Hallett of the Ohio Citizens for the Arts Foundation, conducted an arts advocacy coaching session for the students. Also participating in the school visit, was Tri-M Chapter President Susan Lang.
On Arts Day, held April 1 at the Vern Riffe Government Center, students will visit several legislators’ offices in the morning to advocate for the Ohio Arts Council and arts education. Students and legislators are then invited to The Governor’s Awards for the Arts in Ohio Luncheon. A dessert reception will follow, giving students another opportunity to share ideas and network.
The Eastwood delegation plans to tour the capital and Ohio Supreme Court buildings following the Arts Day events. This experience teaches students about government with an emphasis on their passion for the arts.
The Tri-M Music Honor Society is the international music honor society for middle/junior high and high school students. It is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishments and service activities, and to inspire other students to excel at music and leadership.
The Eastwood Chapter was chartered in 2007. The co-advisers are Brian Myers, Matt Safford (band directors) and Jennifer Conklin (choir director).
