On Sept. 18 and 19, representatives from Owens Community College made a special delivery to several area school students – backpacks, crayons, markers and assorted other school supplies – through the annual Backpack to the Future outreach program. Over the past three months, Owens Community College’s Alumni Association in collaboration with Books-A-Million Inc., Directions Credit Union, Great Lakes Credit Union and GenoaBank collected new and gently used backpacks and new school supplies for distribution to disadvantaged school children throughout Northwest Ohio.
Members of the Owens baseball team and alumni association delivered backpacks and school supplies to students from Glenwood Elementary on Sept. 19. Among those attending were (from left to right), A.J. Perez; Laura Moore, director of alumni relations; Huston Barber; David Krauss; yler Mehler; Kaye Koeving, alumni association; Payton Scott; Stacie Feix, aumni association; Christi Wagner, alumni board member.
The drive also collected more than $3,433 from community members, which went toward the purchase of school supplies.
The supplies were delivered to kindergarten students in Bowling Green, North Baltimore, Elmwood, Eastwood, Rossford, Northwood, Genoa and Woodmore school districts at Rossford’s Glenwood Elementary School, and to five Toledo Public Schools, including East Broadway Elementary School.
The Owens Alumni Association established “Backpack to the Future” supply drive in 2004 as a way to provide educational outreach to the surrounding communities. To date, the program has given over 3,410 backpacks and more than 62,370 school supplies to benefit disadvantaged children throughout Northwest Ohio.
