Some compare him to Jimmy Buffett, the troubadour of the Florida Keys and the Caribbean waters.

Pat Dailey, the troubadour of the Lake Erie Islands, will bring a little (Lake Erie) island fun to the 2008 Ottawa County Fair, which runs July 14-20 at the county fairgrounds on SR 163 near Oak Harbor.

Dailey has drawn a loyal following since he first took the stage of the popular Beer Barrel Saloon on Put-in-Bay in the summer of 1978 for what he thought would be a weekend gig. Playing a regular steady gig inspired him to write his own songs about the things he enjoyed most in his life - fishing, boating, and having a real good time. The songs would become and remain popular with thousands of tourists throughout the Great Lakes, into Lower Canada and all over the North Coast for years to come.

General admission to the fair is $5 per day for patrons age 9 and older. Passes for the duration of the fair are available for $20 for those 18 and older and for $15 for those 9-17.

The fair gets underway July 14 with a pretty baby contest and harness racing at 6 p.m. and the Jr. Fair King and Queen Contest at 8 p.m. Harness racing opens that night at 6 and continues through July 16 with the Northwest Ohio Colt Racing.

Dailey is the featured attraction on when he performs at 8 p.m. July 16, which is also Senior Citizens Day. There will be free blood pressure and sugar screening offered by Magruder Hospital personnel from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., senior citizens bingo will be played from 10 to 11:30 a.m., a box lunch will be offered to seniors age 60 and older at noon, a seniors pinochle and euchre tournament will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. and a seniors corn hole tournament will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the shelter house. The Crimson Lights play in a warm-up role at 3 and 5 p.m.

Senior Citizens Day is just one of several specially designated days at the county fair. July 15 is Veterans Day and the day that rides open at the fair at 3 p.m. A hog-calling contest is on tap at 6 p.m., along with a youth talent contest, chainsaw-carving demonstrations from 6:30 p.m. until dark, and a king and queen contest at 8 p.m.

July 20, the final day of the fair, is Kid’s Day. There will be a Kid’s Fishing Derby at 10 a.m./11:30 a.m., a draft horse hitch show at 10 a.m., Showman of Showmen Contest at 11 a.m., a pie-eating contest at 2 p.m., and an auto and pick-up truck demolition derby at 4 p.m.

On the non-specially designated days in between Seniors Day and the fair’s conclusion on Kid’s Day, there are plenty of activities, too. July 17 features saddle horse and ponies judging at 9 a.m., baked goods judging at 11:30 a.m. (yum!), demolition derby at 7:30 p.m., and the band Haywire performs from 8 to 11 p.m.

July 17 and 18 are likewise busy. Highlights on Friday (the 17th) include Faircross motorcycle racing and Imperial Stunt Drivers at 7 p.m. and Imperial Stunt Drivers with the Jackson Highway Band performing from 8 to 11 p.m.

On Saturday (the 18th), there is a horse show at 9 a.m., kiddie tractor pull at 1 p.m., a performance by magicians Disappearing, Inc. at 4 p.m., an OSTPA tractor pull at 6 p.m., a chainsaw carving auction at 7 p.m., and performances from 8 to 11 p.m. by Northcoast Rockers and at 9 p.m. by Square Dance with The Hot Shots.

There will also be an antique tractor display at the fair again this year. Tractors can be brought to the fairgrounds beginning July 13 at noon and July 14 at noon. For more info, contact the fair board office at 419-898-1971 or visit www.ottawacountyfair.org.
