Seven students in the Terra Community College Plastics Technology program and their instructors recently attended a national conference in Dearborn, Mich. sponsored by the Color and Appearance Division of the Society of Plastics Engineers.

“Driving Color into the Next Decade” was the theme of the three-day event which began Sept. 21.  In recent years, Professor Jamie Przybylski’s students have been the guests of the Color and Appearance Division at the conferences.

“Attending this national conference is always a benefit for the students,” said Przybylski, who teaches in the plastics technology program at Terra. “They meet lots of people in the plastics field and gather lots of business cards.”

Scott Johnston, of Gibsonburg, networked, handed out business cards and discussed job openings.

“It’s a very good networking tool,” Johnston said. “Not just meeting people but learning how to meet people.”

Other suburban-area students attending were Todd Koczorowski of Luckey and Justin Garcia of Oak Harbor.

One step closer
Genoa’s Brittany Darling has advanced to the second round of Cold Stone Creamery’s interactive iMix America contest. Local support and social networking skills will be deciding factor in each contestant’s success.

The contest kicked off in February with 9,000 applicants vying for the chance to win $30,000 in prizes. Darling’s application was chosen and she created her ice cream Creation at the Cold Stone on Crossroads Parkway in Rossford in early August.

After weeks of online voting, Cold Stone reduced the number of contestants to the top 125 Creations based on rank, and Darling‘s ice cream Creation, Rockin’ Reese’s Cookie Dough, made the cut. Below is the recipe to Darling’s ice cream Creation.

“iMix America gives this savvy group of Gen Y’s the opportunity to promote their own Creations on social networking sites to friends all across the country,” said Dan Beem, president of Cold Stone Creamery. “And Brittany has done a great job of doing just that; it’s exciting to see our imaginative brand become more interactive.”

At the time of elimination, Rockin’ Reese’s Cookie Dough is ranked 20, but there is still time for that ranking to change. The contest continues until the end of the year, with two more elimination brackets to go through. The top three Creations at the end of the first bracket were Tiramisu Temptation from Florida, Chocolate Covered Cherry from Pennsylvania, and Breakfast in Bed from Massachusetts. The next bracket ends on Nov. 15, when the Creations will be narrowed down to the top 20.

Cold Stone was able to have students all across the country participate in iMix America.

Brittany’s Rockin’ Reese’s Cookie Dough includes chocolate ice cream mixed with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, chocolate chip cookie dough, and fudge.
The iMix America winner will be awarded in January 2009 at the Cold Stone Creamery headquarters in Scottsdale, Ariz. The prize package, worth $30,000, includes automotive, travel, electronics, and cellular phone products and services.
