Clay High School’s 1,300 students are enjoying the school year and making new memories in a newly remodeled building. On Sept. 30, a dedication ceremony was for the newly remodeled high school building. The National Anthem, played by the band, and the school’s alma mater set kicked off the celebration. The ceremony went on with remarks from the current Clay High School principal Loren Dirr and followed with remarks from five of the school‘s past principals.
Tamara Swartz, president of Clay High School Alumni and Friends presented Mr. Dirr with a picture of the school’s namesake and the school crest. The ceremony wrapped up with the band playing the school fight song. Those who gathered enjoyed refreshments, followed by tours of the building. Those on the tour were told that the renovations included safety updates, including elimination of asbestos. The new design offers enhanced workspace for secretaries and office help, who say they previously lacked enough electrical outlets for office equipment. They said that before, they would blow fuses often due to too many computers running off the same plug. Another problem at the old Clay High School was flooding of the band room every time it rained, risking damage to thousands of dollars worth of musical instruments. The old high school was comprised of three buildings that included an old elementary school and the old high school. Students had to walk outside to get to class. Now, everyone is under one roof. The new school also offers increased security. School starts at 7:55 a.m. If students are not in their classes by 8:05 a.m..., they are considered tardy. All of the doors lock at 8:05 a.m. and after that time, the only way to enter the building is either through the attendance door or the main entry door by the office. Lastly, students also have more paved parking available to them.
